DH always wants to yell at parents who let their kids run around loose in parking lots.
I showed Gwen a smooshed squirrel in the middle of the road and told her that's her if she ever lets go of my hand when crossing the street/in parking lots. Every time we go over to my parents I ask her "What happens if you let go of mommy's hand". "I get smooshed". That's right.
So far she's doing really well.
I'm embarrassed to say I was surprised at how great Gwen's teeth were. I've been putting off taking her to the dentist and short of sitting on top of her getting a 3.5 year old to brush her teeth is a challenge. At least one person in this family has good teeth/gums!

Mitch, I was wondering - over what period of time would that have to continue to happen to cause serious or any damage? Damn it, I really wish I knew how to tag people I've seen pictures of "baby bottle mouth" in kids that are as young as 6-8 months, not long after they get those front teeth in. Babies are born with a 'sterile' mouth. Most oral microbes need a supporting surface (aka teeth) in order to anchor to. And the microbial flora that they pick up (including those that cause caries) is that of their mother. This happens as soon as they get their first tooth. So if the mother is infected with a more virulent strain of S. mutans (the microbe that causes most of the destruction, but a few other strains do too), then the child will pick that up too. We had a post doc doing this study back in the mid 1980s. If you ever put a kid to bed with a bottle, it should only be water. If a child has a bottle with milk or formula, it helps to wipe down the teeth with a wet cloth/gauze afterwards, but especially before putting them down to sleep, because saliva and milk tend to pool behind the teeth at the bottom of their mouth. There has been an incredible amount of research done on this, a lot in the lab I worked in. Same lab (we left in 1986, but still collaborate with them) has been working on a vaccine.

I am very glad I didn't know all this when my boys were babies. I didn't do it all the time, but there were certainly times when I gave them milk in the bottle in their cribs.
Sometimes ignorance really is a bliss.
BTW they all seem to have good teeth, so hopefully I didn't screw them up too bad

I know, I was shocked with my 2 when I took them in last fall for their first checkups at 4 and 5.5. No cavities or problems. Which reminds me, I need to make appts. for their next appt.

You DH shows restraint. I want to slap the living daylights/sh## out of parents who do this. I actually took off running after a 2 or 3 yr old that had gone between cars and was headed into the traffic part of the parking lot. The parents were yammering away and didn't even see her step off the curb.

Unfortunately, a lot of parents seem to think that "they are just baby teeth, they'll lose them anyway". It is true, they will lose them. But baby teeth are 'practice' teeth so you do have a do over with them. But if the timing is lousy, in that you have a 3 year old with a mouth full of caries, you need to make a difficult decision. Those teeth are going to be around for another 3-4 years and they DO need them to eat and chew. So do you wait for 4 years and hope that the teeth don't wind up abscessed? Do you wait until the kid is in pain? Do you pull the teeth and hope that they'll only be toothless for 2-3 years? Like periodontal disease, the only way to totally get rid of the microbes that cause disease is to pull the teeth. And yes, I know of people who have had this done as well. However, these people are usually older adults and their bad teeth are causing cardiac problems. The cardiac issues are so emergent that it is more expedient to pull all the teeth and heal, than to try to clean things up and salvage teeth. It's a sad situation all the way around, especially when you consider how many ways there are to prevent this (caries in children).

That's DH. When he was a kid that was the prevailing dental philosophy so I understand but he needs to realize this is now 2014.
He thinks dental care nowadays is all a giant scam. He told me that bleeding gums was totally normal I was just brushing too hard.
So I'm in charge of the kiddo's dental care.
Wish his attitude about dental care bled over into medical care. This is the man who went to the ER for a migraine, but I was being paranoid by getting a dental deep clean.

What I really want to say to some people: Are you really that fucking stupid? How did you make it this far in life without hurting yourself?

My first responsibility is to get the kids into their seats (booster seats now, car seats before) because I can replace the groceries or the stuff. I can't replace the kids. Yeah, it sucked when they were smaller and I had to teach DD to hang onto the car while I got her younger brother strapped in. And crossing the street, running in parking lots still gets them a smack on the butt.

No, it's not. Bleeding gums are NOT normal (and I know you know this). My gums do not bleed when I brush my teeth, and they do not bleed when they hygienist cleans my teeth either. I'm 54 and have managed to hold onto my teeth over a decade longer than either of my parents, who both lost their teeth to periodontal disease.
I'm glad you are in charge of Gwen's mouth.

Your DH is close to my age, isn't he? I'm 43. And I don't really get the 2x a year checkup thing. But if the pros are telling me that's what my kids need, then that's what they get. But if there's a vaccine for cavities I'm going to be all over that one...

Yeah we had quite an argument over that. Mainly because I felt he insulted my intelligence. I'm not the one who jumps every time someone in a white coat says "boo".

DD's orthodontist actually did a very good job of explaining to me through DD's x-rays why early dental care and orthodontics are very important.
The baby teeth "set the stage" for the adult teeth, and early loss of the baby teeth mean the adult teeth don't come in where they are supposed to.
Then when you have overcrowding, you're more likely to get decay, and there are all sorts of health problems that are now found to be related to tooth decay.

My gums bleed like once a year or two when I'm brushing. I assume I'm brushing different than normal (new toothbrush, paste or brushing a popcorn fragment further in than out or whatever) because it's not a usual occurrence.

The only thing that should cause this is having a popcorn fragment in your gum. A new toothbrush or paste should have no effect whatsoever. Using dental floss is better for getting popcorn out than brushing.

But if there's a vaccine for cavities I'm going to be all over that one... The reason for 2x/year is because they make sure that everything is ok. Periodontal disease is MUCH easier treated if it is caught early, with a more successful result. It is easier to fill a small cavity than need a root canal. And for some, they develop enough calculus (that hard stuff that they scrape off your teeth) that it is easier to scrape it off every 6 months than every year. When I was in KY, my hygienist told me that she had one patient who had calculus build up so much that if he waited a year between appointments, that it would take her an hour scheduled to only do one quarter of his mouth.

Heck, I use an electric toothbrush, and mine don't bleed. Now they will bleed a bit when the hygienist gets in there, but not much.

My biggest pet peeve involves my twins, especially when they were young. I would take them and my preschooler to the grocery store while wearing one twin and pushing the other twin in a small stroller. So many people would ask these two questions - 1. Are they twins? 2. Are they natural? I always wanted to respond with something snarky like I grew them in pods in my back yard or they are triplets and I forgot one at home. But I never could think of it fast enough. I just couldn't imagine the nerve of complete strangers. What business of theirs is it his my twins were conceived? I wouldn't walk up to some lady with big boobs and ask, "are they natural?"

LOL! I'd like to say to people with too many kids, or to those who shouldn't have reproduced in the first place: "It's called birth control!!!"I'd like to say to our neighbors with 12+ people living in the home: "Get a f*ucking job! All of you adults, and you two teenagers!!"
I'm sleepy today, otherwise I could come up with more. A LOT more.... ETA: What I DO say, when people ask if DH and I have kids: "No, we don't breed well in captivity." Makes 'em laugh and shut up every time.

What I'd really love to say to my kids' biomom (but haven't yet): "Giving birth to 4 kids does not make you an awesome mother! It doesn't even make you a good mother!" I won't though - I love my kids too much to hurt them like that.
I'd love to tell my coworker - "being in this job for 20 years does not mean you have 20 years of experience - you've been doing the same year worth of work for 20 years. Grow a little!!"
