but just don't have the cojones to do so.
I just got back from Costco and stopped to grab something to eat. While I was eating, a car pulled up beside me and a woman and a child in a booster seat was in it. Child looked to be an oldish 3 year old, maybe 4. Child unstraps her belt and climbs out on her own. Mom grabs the diaper bag that was in the back seat. In the diaper bag there was a full baby bottle of milk, that she gave the child as they were walking into the restaurant.
Sigh.....as soon as a child starts getting teeth, they should NOT be drinking from a bottle. I wanted to rush out and tell her that that was a really good way of her kid winding up with a buttload of caries in her teeth.
I didn't.

Yup - some parents want to keep their children "babies" for far too long.
It wouldn't have done any good to say anything to her - it wouldn't change her mind - and she'd probably tell you to "butt-out".
(Some women continue to breast-feed their kids even when they've reached school-age.
I've also seen kids in stores that are maybe 3 or 4 and still drinking from a baby bottle.

My personal favorite is women who leave their handbags in the grocery store cart seat unattended. I'm not exactly Speed Racer, and I could grab your Coach and dash out with no problem, toots. Your designer bag would wind up at a local flea market so fast, it wouldn't have time to collect any fleas.

Sigh, most babies start getting teeth as early as 2 months old. AAP recommends no food until 6 months old and breast or bottle for a year. They are supposed to starve because they have teeth? Sorry, I just cringe every time somebody says teeth means no more breastfeeding or bottles.

We're not talking about infants though - these children are 3, 4, 5 yrs old - and sometimes even older.

Not at all. I believe the ADA recommends that bottle feeding should not continue after one year of age. If a child is old enough to hold a bottle, they are old enough to hold a sippy cup. The mechanisms that the mouth uses to drink from a sippy cup are different than those of a bottle. And a child should NEVER be put to bed with a bottle. In this case, I think a 4 year old is a bit too old for a bottle.
You would not believe the condition of nursery children's teeth I have seen. When we went to Head Start programs, I saw a lot of 3 year olds where their front teeth are all rotted out from being laid to sleep with a bottle, I want to cry. When you see a year old who has NO TEETH WHATSOEVER in the front of his mouth - he was missing about 12 teeth - (yeah, I saw him in one of our dental vans), I want to knock someone up against the head.

OK, not to be picky, but all my kids held their bottles at around 6mo - I have pics to prove it, doesn't mean they should have stopped using it. I also put my kids in their cribs with bottles when they were little. I needed to shut them up and it worked like a charm. I think when it comes to baby/parenting, etc it's hard to have "hard" rules bc kids are so different and situations are so different
anywhooo.....
I *try* not to say anything, but I am not too successful. I tell people all.the.freaking time to put their shopping carts away - huge pet peeve of mine.
I have told people to at least look the other way when they are smoking around little kids

I (anecdotally) think most pediatric dental problems come from parents giving babies and toddlers juice, soda and other sugary drinks.

A couple of my pet peeves involve car seats. They do not belong on top of shopping carts. They're not made to fit there, and they can and will fall off causing injury or death to a baby inside one balanced on top of a cart. If you have to take the infant car seat in, place it inside the big basket part of the shopping cart.
And babies need to be securely and properly restrained in their car seats. Read the manual, get your installation checked, and buckle them in correctly each and every time. And please don't post pictures of your kids on Facebook not in their car seats properly.

Sorry, I just cringe every time somebody says teeth means no more breastfeeding or bottles. Ditto. I (anecdotally) think most pediatric dental problems come from parents giving babies and toddlers juice, soda and other sugary drinks. Saliva breaks lactose (milk sugars) down into glucose and galactose. Same sugar as found in soda so it really is not much different. Fructose, found in fruit juice is chomped on by S. mutans as well, to produce acid....and ultimately cause caries. When a child is put down with a bottle, the fluid accumulates behind the back teeth. It is degraded and the back of the front lower teeth are the most susceptible.

Mitch, I was wondering - over what period of time would that have to continue to happen to cause serious or any damage?
Damn it, I really wish I knew how to tag people

Just look at all the parents who take their toddlers to McD's for a "Happy Meal" - the food is bad enough in and of itself - but they give them a juice or soda on top of that. No wonder kids have tooth decay and obesity.

Toddlers with teeth don't need a bottle when they're put down for the night - a cuddly animal should be enough to calm them - in extreme measures to get them to "calm down and sleep", a pacifier is enough.

"username" sugi = not display name. It also has to be prefaced with the @ symbol.
The best way to find out a person's user name is to hover your cursor over their display name at the top of their profile.

My pet peeve is with how many people treat their animals and/or the Wild Life. And my mouth usually wins when it could be life or death or cruelty in any way. Same applies to kids but that is very, very rare. These days parents that I see or know coddle their kids to the other extreme which is preferred to cruelty - of course. But I do want to speak to the parents with out and out wild brats in public places like nice restaurants. In those cases I even consider cruelty myself.

I always have many things I'd like to say. ***To parents who allow their children to stand in shopping carts: "Are you nuts or what?"***To women who exhibit expensive hairdos and nails, then complain that they can't afford diapers or food for their kids: "Why do you care more about yourself than you do your kids?"***To people who use cell phones while driving: "Why do you care more about yourself than the lives of others?"Gee, this is fun. I could go on and on.

They always look like toddlers with a full diaper to me. I'm also tempted to take a picture & show them how ridiculous they look.
