I have to get 45 minutes earlier, i have to work a night shift 2-10pm on tuesday and be back at 8 am on Wednesday. it's a college and I'm a civil servant for the great state of NY. not much urgency in getting work orders done. very little hands on work, a lot of phone and after hours remote. if the user forgets to log off(about 50%) of the time, we reschedule. I now realize I had a sweet gig at pepsi but the employment wasn't good(un benefited, low paid contractor) another thing I realized that while I was chasing a permanent full time gig(for 10+ years), I was also aging. i'm 54 and will have to work until i'm 74 to see the pension. so i opted for the SUNY 401K or whatever it is instead of the NYS pension. I've already been contacted by 2 corporations for perm positions but the weren't in my preferred geographical location. i can afford to be picky now that i have a real job. i wasn't liking the whole scene at first, but i'm settling into it. it's very cliquey and i'm unique. i'm also older than most of the team. i'm finding that the guys don't know as much as corporate techs. so i've played the hero a few times and have gained some respect. i wear jeans, casual shirts and sneakers(the status quo union uniform). the faculty are ancient and full of themselves. the kids are kids. it's an art school so it's like glee or fame. it gets frustrating some times because i pride myself on results and team work. any kind of escalation or needing another member on a different team to assist is met with playing dumb(what do mean by the port isn't active?, i don't understand what you need, your not being clear. I mean the lan drop in the office, right next to the desk, that the computer is plugged into isn't active, it needs to be enabled, Mr. Network guy ) a lot of "not my job" too. my first month i figured out that trying to hang on in westchester or fairfield is a waste of time, money and life. my investments at a record high(i can almost feel coming "correction") so i realized that i could buy a brand new 200 sq ft 3 bdrm, 2.5 bath, 2 car garage house by putting 100g down and paying 300 and change a month in the research triangle in north carolina(and probably get a decent full time perm job in my field(NC is one of the 10 states where jobs are growing)). I would have another 150 g left to supplement the col. i now want to retire , i figure it would be a miricle if i live another 25 years and i don't want to be too old to enjoy life in retirement. my GF told me there is no way in hell she would move to NC, but if i felt the need, she would understand if i left. trust me it's in the back of my mind to stick it out for a year and then move out of NY. it's getting ridiculous around here on so many levels quality of life and COL wise. i was just thinking tonight while carrying 50 lbs of groceries from the street up two flights of stairs how nice it would be to park my car in a new garage and just walk the groceries into the kitchen. my cat is 18 and starting to wake me up several times in the middle of night, so I'm exhausted at times. but life goes on within you and without you so I guess i got what i wished for. TGIF

Nothing wrong with NC- especially that area. I have a few friends that came to TN from CA and NYC and are shocked at how much house they can buy. I have another friend that moved to NYC and lives in a dorm room sized apartment that costs more a month than my mortgage- she did say though she doesn't need a car so maybe that is one offset, and that her friends were shocked that she used to carry a .38 revolver in her purse before she moved. The triangle area is nice and I would think finding a job would be easy. Get yourself a nice home, maybe a screened porch and enjoy not living right next to someone else- nice and quiet at night too. The weather is better as well
