Only one other poster on the boards knows all of this, but 2 weeks ago I went to Seattle to see my newborn GS and darn is he cute! Now to the part I haven't told: while there Infell on the sidewalk rather hard and broke my humeris in two places. I have seen an orthopedist and the treatment consists of immobilizung my shoulder ( breaks are at the top). So far so good, but now my question. Most of my bruises have faded except for a very large one on the inside of my arm. That one is still as black as it ever was. Is this normal or should I call my doctor about this? I never fall, well I didn't before this , and have absolutely no experience with anything like this. Not only is this my first broken bone in 62 years, my kids wild as they were never broke anything either so I would appreciate input from someone that has at least some experience. my preferred answer would be yeah sure, no biggie but only if that is a true statement

I'm not a nurse or a doctor but I would never, ever mess with my physical well being. Are you in pain? I would think that bruise is telling you something is wrong and/or damaged and that you had better listen to it. How would you feel being immobile for the rest of your life due to ignoring something like this? If it would make you unhappy then I'd suck it up, pay it out ($$) and get it checked and resolved. Your health and physical well-being is the only thing you can't buy in life - until you die. Don't mess with it! But congratulations on your new grandson!! I'm sure he'd love his grandma to be able to play with him and pick him up.

No pain in that area POM which is why I am asking here. I just don't want to come off as a silly whiner. But my shiner ( that was a first too) is completely gone, and both the top bruise and the one on the outside of my arm are fading but this one doesn't seem to do so. Another reason for asking is that going to the doctor means I need to bum a ride during work hours since I can't drive myself. ETA I totally played the pity card and had GS on my lap for most of my week there

Congrats on the new grandson. I would call and ask the nurse in the Dr. Office. My insurance has a 24 hour nurse line. I called # on back of card and it was one of the options on voice prompt. I got connected to a live person (as opposed to a virtual person on a computer).
Good Luck.

I'm not a Dr or nurse, and don't pretend to be one online.
I've found from previous history/injuries of my own, that bruising that forms on the more fleshy part of the body (in your case, the inside of your arm), usually heals a lot slower and takes longer to fade.
If you bang your shin or elbow (closer to the bone), the bruising usually disappears sooner.

It's not uncommon for deep bruises to take weeks to fade. Longer as we get older. It's probably nothing. Seeing if your insurance company has a nurse advice line is a good idea though. Saves you from having to make an appointment and bum a ride, but still gives you a medical opinion from somebody with some training.

Wasn't that examined and addressed by the orthopedic doc? I assume it is all part of the same injury. And yes deep bruises take a long time to go away.

Oh no! I am sorry about your arm. Glad it gave you extra time with your GS, though!

Sorry to hear of this, Joss.
About 1 1/2 years ago, I had a hard fall from my bike, bruising the left arm from elbow to wrist. Nothing broke, but the bruise was huge and an alarming shade of black, purple, blue and a bit of red and yellow thrown in for good measure. Very, very deep bruising as it turned out. Took almost six weeks to fade, and I am almost 10 years younger than you. So the time frame isn't all that big an issue; the deep bruises can take time. And aside from rest, good nutrition and not hurting yourself again, time is really the only thing that helps.

I slipped in the bathtub and landed on my hip. The black and blue was there for weeks.

It depends upon where the bruising is. Some places the bruise resolves rather quickly but other areas take a lot longer.
I caught the hook on the back of the door on my upper arm. Hurt like hell, and went through black/purple/green/yellow stages rather fast. Same arm on the inside between my elbow and wrist, I whacked on a doorknob. It was still black while the upper arm was yellow and I whacked it a couple days earlier.
Same day I whacked my upper arm on the hook of the door, I fell on my hip. Bruise on the hip went even faster than the one on my upper arm, even though the upper arm happened about 3 hours later (yeah.....I had a rough couple of days there!).

I bumped into a gate latch about bicep high and got a bruise. It is faint but still there.
I don't know where I read this but I recall reading that vitamin C can help fade bruises. It might be worth the research.
I agree to talk with the physician that initially saw you or as other peeps suggested.

My father fell and did that - twice - once on each arm!
The bruise is most likely the location of the break - double check with your orthopedic specialist as it is very important that the break heal properly.
Breaks like that can be very unstable so make sure you keep it immobilized - my father had major surgery right after his first break and would not leave it immobilized - he mistakenly thought the sling was tying him to the bed. We chose not to make an issue of it at the time due to his age and other health issues but it never did heal properly - he was never able to raise that arm over his head again. He later fell and broke his left arm - on asphalt again - and that time he was able to leave it immobilized - it healed far better with full range of motion.
Also make sure you go through all the Physical Therapy you can get in order to properly strengthen and regain as much mobility as possible.
Wishing you a speedy and full recovery!
