I used my debit card at Target last weekend. Just logged in to my checking account and all is well (so far). I may just transfer some money into my savings account for a few days to be safe.
The article I read about it this morning also said debit cards were compromised.
on edit: I just transferred money from checking to savings. I'd rather be safe than sorry. There is enough left to carry us to the end of the month, but the rest is in an account not involved with Target mess.

We've got fraud protection on our cards due to a data breach that happened in Oct and wasn't reported until Nov. So I guess I'm covered. I use my red card at Target too.

We don't have over draft protection. It's been over 40 years since we've made the mistake of over drawing our checking account. We keep a large cushion in the account and I know how much is in there within a few dollars everyday.
On edit: I've been on the phone with our contact at WF. Canceling my debit card and a new one issued. Better safe than sorry and have to deal with things later. The banker did tell me that WF is already canceling some cards.

I shopped there after Thanksgiving. Luckily I paid using a gift card and the balance with cash. It's getting to the point where I wonder if the 1% in CC rewards is worth it. I might feel differently if I were earning 5%.

Their website and CS number are slammed. The redcard site is down, CS number has been busy or a dead line all morning. I am going to cancel my red (debit) card and have them reissue a new one. What a huge PITA. I think I've only shopped in store once, maybe twice, during the stated time frame. I bought mostly from them online, which they are saying was not affected.
There are A LOT of PO'd people on blogs, etc. I wonder what the financial implications for Target will be, AND if there will be any backlash regarding the fact that it was not reported to consumers earlier. How convenient with everyone shopping there for Christmas and Target not wanting to lose out of $$$ business!

If you don't switch debit cards, at least change you PIN numbers.
I looked up what all is stored on the magnetic strips and it's a LOT of info including your address! So be alert for anything unusual!
I don't shop at Target. I've never liked their stores. And I'm old fashioned, I still write checks for nearly everything!

ugh....I might have a problem. I use 4 cards (1 debit, 3 CC covering the 4 major flavors) somewhat regularly. I looked back thru those accounts and I have one transaction on the AmEx in that window. dammit....that's my oldest account, that's never been breached, and still has the account number from day 1 that's burned into my brain. I called AmEx earlier tonight and managed to let myself get talked into not cancelling that card tonight.....if for no other reason than I wanted to get off the phone with that operator. I still haven't decided that I'm not going to cancel/reissue that card. AmEx and Discover have both found single instances of fraud on my accounts before I even noticed a pending charge.....I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt here. what say y'all? in my head, I know I should cancel/reissue....but it's going to be a huge PITA to reset all the autopays from that card, plus wait for the reissue, plus reset any sites where I have the account saved. grr.....I know, I should just reissue.

I'm in the same boat. DS wanted an Ipad mini for Christmas, so we went out on Saturday to Best Buy to go ahead and get it. He's replacing the money from the purchase of it with money he gets from family for Christmas. This way he could get it and play with it and have it loaded for our trip to TN the morning after Christmas. They didn't have them anymore, so we hopped over to Target to get one. We mistakenly used my MC CC to purchase it (I pointed to a card thinking it was the credit union account where he had his money vs. another account he has that I knew didn't have $300 in it). So, my mistake, but at least it was a CC and not his debit card. This really blows because this is the card I use. I have an AMEX that I have for emergencies in case the MC is having a hiccup (like this). Now I'm worried about the hotel accepting the AMEX for the dog charges once we get there, gas, food, etc. Not too many places accept the AMEX. And I don't like having a balance on two cards. I hate having to keep up with a lot of bills. And like pointed out, I have several things that are automatically paid on that card. So far, no weird charges. It's a wonder they haven't called me, because I just put almost $500 on it today from the dentist visit my DS had for his tooth extraction and flipper.
And I've heard that if the hackers are true to form, there are probably other places that got hacked at the same time. Apparently they like to set up more than one hack so they can get multiple places before it's discovered. Oh bother.....

I've heard a lot of people are successfully getting new cards over nighted to them with this problem. So time-wise you shouldn't be out too much.

I don't know what hotel you are staying, but I've never had a problem with a hotel not accepting AMEX.
I could not tell you the last time I shopped at Target. Years ago.

I think the whole Target mess is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Most of the time companies give FREE fraud protection and/or credit monitoring when data breaches happen. Target is offering NOTHING!
Can you see some BIG ltigator getting his bank account emptied or 10k being run up on his cc sitting still?

For those of you who are NOT changing your account #s on your cards.... Just be aware that the magnetic strip info that was hacked included a lot of info and this doesn't have to be used right away. Some one can create a new card even a yr. or two from now and use it! This happened to a gal on another board & she remind all the posters there that it can be way down the road before your info is used in an attempt to make a purchase. She lucked out as her bank called before they would approve the charge...and it was being done 1/2 the country away from her in a state she had never visited. Not all banks do this!

According to the nightly news, there have already been 4 lawsuits filed.
i gave up trying to call them last night. After looking more closely at my bank account, I realized I did not have any purchases in the store during that time frame. I was there on the 16th, so not too worried about it now. Once things calm down, I will probably cancel the target debit card and go with a credit card. Only reason I went with the debit years ago was because it was during my Dave Ramsey, pay off debt, never use a CC phase. I am a million times more responsible with CC's now, just never really thought about switching it til now. But yeah, having money disappear out of your checking account vs a few unauthorized charges on a credit card would really suck.

For those who do use a Target Redcard, if your payment will be due soon, I recommend that you try to make that payment now. The Redcard website is not functioning properly.
Our payment (we are not on auto-debit) was due today (12-20). We attempted to make the payment beginning 12-19 at about 5:00 PM. The Redcard site repeatedly denied access, and when we did get access, it kept crashing.
I was finally able to make the payment today, so it was not late. Each page change, though, took between 1 & 1/2 and 3 & 1/2 minutes. If I had waited until the last minute to make the payment, I well may have been debating with them over a late payment.

well like I said, I'm not stressing about it at all....it just means I now have to keep my target receipts and verify them against my debit transactions. other than that, I'm not doing anything different. and a lawsuit was filed, so? people file frivilous lawsuits all the time, doesn't mean it has any merit.

That previous lawsuit may be frivolous, but it sounds like the banks are about ready to do the same to recoup their costs for all the customer service they have had to provide.
I hope you at least changed the pin on your debit! From the news reports earlier today, all the info collected off the magnetic strips is now for sale on the black market....which would include pin numbers.

per everything I've read, it was the Target Red Card credit card, not the debit card.....so no, I haven't changed my PIN.

It was the Credit AND debit cards. The statement on Targets website clearly stated both. And it wasn't just Target cards, was any bank cards, credit or debit. The only thing they excluded were online transactions. Luckily, I was only in the store on Dec 16th. I still changed my Pin once I finally was able to access the website.

I used my credit card on Dec 13th.
I thought about calling and cancelling/reissuing that card, but I have Xmas purchases on it, and last year, when I had to redo that card, I had a devil of a time w/ returns.
I have been checking my statement and actually stopped using that particular card. Once Xmas is over, I will probably have it reissued.

The unauthorized access may impact guests who made credit or debit card purchases in our U.S. stores from Nov. 27 to Dec. 15, 2013.
We have determined that the information involved in this incident included customer name, credit or debit card number, and the card’s expiration date and CVV.
Above cut and pasted from Target's website...
I was just going to close my Target debit card, but I too have Christmas purchases on it, some of which I already know I have to return, and expected it to be a nightmare to return the items if I closed the account. After I make my returns, I plan on closing it and opening a credit card with them instead of debit.

From an article written in the Star Tribune, the Minneapolis, Mn. newspaper
Card payment systems work much the way they have for decades. The magnetic strip on the back of a credit or debit card contains the cardholder's name, account number, the card's expiration date and a security code different from the three or four-digit security code printed on the back of most cards.

I just looked for an article I read earlier today....but to summarize: PIN numbers associated with debit cards may have been compromised, that is why JP Morgan Chase has limited dollar amount transactions on debit cards. Even though normally, your PIN number is not available on the magnetic strip, there is a way hackers of this quality that hit target are able to gain access to it.
My advice? If you used a debit card at Target and have NOT canceled your card, do so as quickly as you can. It's better to be proactive than to discover you hav money missing from you account.
