Giramomma - Re: the poor minority problem....it's just easier to throw them welfare money and complain about thugs/welfare rats than it is to actually re-vamp the education system in poor urban areas. Is it the education system or the culture? I'm not sure that a teacher can overcome the mentality of some if the ghettos dwellers. Jen was far from the ghetto but she had mentioned getting shit for doing well in school. Imagine what the kids in the ghetto deal with on a daily basis.

I believe that the "education" for poor (urban) minorities has to start much sooner. These kids need positive role models from day one who can teach them that you can be financially successful without being a pro athlete/entertainer/criminal and that education is important. And give them easy access to resources to help them realize their goals. That is much more comprehensive than the current way we deal with this problem - and much more expensive. We (the more "privileged" members of society) have to feel that it's worth it to help these kids.... we clearly don't.
