its expected lifespan? i was folding a towel this morning thinking that it really was past its prime. I only use it when I color my hair, but it really doesn't dry well anymore. So that made me think about when I bought this thing exactly and it is 40 (yes I mean forty) years old And I also realized that I don't have a single towel that is less then 10 years old. I must have a YM gene in my body but as long as something works I never replace things. So what do you have that you kept (much) longer than you ever intended and still use of course

We received a GE hand mixer for a wedding gift in 1964. I finally gave it to Goodwill in 2002 simply because I was soooooo tired of it.
We bought a new GE washer and dryer for our first anniversary, 1965, sold both for $25ea in 1989.

I bought a jacket that is just the right weight to wear on cooler days in the Spring & Fall. Digging it out of the closet the other day, I realized my jacket is older than DD! (Over 20 years old.)

I have a solid wood triple nine drawer dresser that I bought when I was 8 months pg with kiddo. He has moved it so many times that he told me not to pre purchase a coffin. He was going to take out the drawers and frame work and bury me in it BTW he is 47!!! Also have 6 Houlihan glasses from 1982 when I went to New Orleans to celebrate my divorce. They are heavy and just bounce when dropped. A small sauce pan that was a wedding gift back in 64. I wish I still had my 68 Camaro

The T-shirt I wore yesterday is older than my daughter who will be 13 in a couple months. I have a few that are even older. Now if only I could find jeans that would last as long.

My favorite sweatshirt is one my mom bought me. It said "I love cats" and has cats sitting standing around the words. The reverse image is on the back.
It's 25 years old. Wears like a charm.

Living Room tables. They're about 40 years old and still look pretty good. They're a classic style and I expect to keep them a few more years.
Dining room set - it's more than 30 years old and still is great. It has two leaves and expands a lot but only has 4 chairs and I'm looking for more of a similar style so that I can seat everyone when we have family over. Why I didn't buy more chairs at the time I'll never understand, but oh, well.
Pots and pans bought in 1974/75. Le Crueset and most of them look new. I love that if one of them breaks they will replace or repair them. I've sent back several and they sent me a new one - even the cast iron frying pan that had the handle break off!

I was just lamenting to DH yesterday they don't make things like they used to! Food processor: The one I had was at least 18 years old, then DH bought me a new one earlier this year (I donated the old one, complete with the original owner's manual). After a few uses, it already is having (scary!!) issues as of last week. Hand mixer: See above. Coffee maker: See above. The circa 19-IDK fridge/freezer we were given several years ago still works well, though it's unplugged in the garage b/c it uses too much energy. My stereo, including a turntable, is 25+ years old. All 4 delicate and gorgeous Pier One glasses my BFF gave me years ago as a housewarming gift ("Yay, you left your douche canoe boyfriend!!!") are still around, after moving numerous times between 3 states. In what, 1995?, I bought a 5 drawer dresser via those pay monthly (yup, my stoopid credit issues started back then) at a ridiculous interest rate. It's still in decent shape. My now 12-year-old pick up truck has last lasted way beyond my expectations. (knock wood.) I wish NNP still had her 68 Camaro, too!

I have a complete set (dinner plate, soup plate, salad plate, cereal bowl, coffee mug) of that plain white, diner-style "buffalo china" - - for 12 people. I bought it about 33 years ago. In 33 years I've only had to replace one dinner plate and one cereal bowl (breakage). It's been through three moves and many children and guests. It still gets daily use. I never in a million years thought it would last this long. The stuff freakin' wears like iron. ETA: I wish we hadn't sold my dad's 1967 Spider Veloce . . . . .

LOL! The fixtures (faucet and knobs) in my bathroom tub. I did a quicky "fix" to replace the original leaking hardware before I moved in 16 years ago. It was a super inexpensive set because I couldn't decide what I wanted and I needed the shower/tub working and I figured I'd replace it in a year or less. It's still working and I keep saying I'm FINALLY gonna replace the hardware, and then another year goes by. Don't get me started on the string and tape holding the drain pipe under my kitchen sink together... The "handyman plumber" who patched it up said it would hold for a while and it has - 16 years and still not dripping.

I still have and use my mom's everyday Corell dishes (snowflake pattern), and my mom died 30 years ago. She had them for over 10 years i think. I also have her food processer. She didn't use it too much, but I do. I think it is also about 40 years old.

I have a full bedroom suite in the spare bedroom (solid maple) - Headboard, foot board, 9 drawer dresser w/mirror, 4 drawer bureau and 2 end-tables. The original set (bed & bureau) were DH's when he was single. The matching 9 drawer dresser/mirror and 2 end tables we found shortly after getting married. That set is over 30 yrs old (the bed/bureau closer to 40). It's still in pristine condition.
Also a teak dining set - table w/leaf, 6 chairs w/upholstered seats, buffet & hutch w/glass doors(over 25 yrs old and mint condition).
I have a china dining set (setting for 8) that was purchased nearly around the time of the teak dining furniture - complete with all matching accessory pieces (cream/sugar, gravy boat, salt/pepper, serving platter, large serving bowls, etc.
And good cutlery set -(aside from my everyday one) - 8 place-settings of knives, soup/teaspoons, salad/dinner forks, and serving utensils.
My carving set/knives in my kitchen is also quite old - but well-made and has lasted me years - as has most of my Corningware.

OMG, I forgot about the Corning Ware baking dishes I have somewhere buried in the kitchen cabinets - they have the blue flower on them. I think they were wedding gifts too. This post reminded me of them. Shows I don't cook a lot

I still have and can wear the dress I purchased for my high school senior prom 39 years ago. It is a classic style and went from floor length when purchased to middy (for my honeymoon) to cocktail length (several years ago). I wear it to cocktail parties and when we go on cruises. We still have a few kitchen items that we received as wedding gifts: stainless flatware, casserole dishes, a recipe box, etc. We handed down a lot of what we eventually "replaced" to DS when he set up household. He is still using our wedding stoneware, Revere-ware pots and pans, etc. I kind of miss the Revere ware. We also have our first dining room set and bedroom set. The bedroom set is over 30 years old and the dining room set isn't far behind that. We have a couple of the towels that we received as wedding gifts, but they are now garage towels. We still have my 2000 model SUV. It is getting ready to turn 90K miles so we could drive it for another 14 years if we should choose to do so. We have been casually shopping for a little larger SUV for long road trips, but so far we haven't found anything that has made us want to buy. I am not a pack rat, so when something no longer serves a useful purpose it either gets donated or thrown out.

We inherited DH's grandma's standing mixer after she passed away. From what I can tell it's from the 60's/70s and it still works. They really don't make things like they used to!

This just reminded me that we are still using DH's alarm clock/radio that he's had since HS. So if he got it as a freshman it's coming up on 30 years old.

A mantle clock we got as a wedding gift. It is a really nice clock with a stairway to heaven thing with moving parts. The trim is brass. I thought it was cheapy brass look finish that would wear away or tarnish or something. 22 years later no tarnish and all moving parts work perfectly. I love that clock.

Mostly clothing. A lot of cashmere sweaters from the 1980s, camel hair winter coat (Brooks Brothers, 1983), a few items (classic black dress, yellow jumpsuit, good navy wool pants) from the 1980s that I hadn't been able to wear for about the last 10 years and then I lost weight. Free clothes!
We use a coffee maker DH bought before we met (1996). He bought me a bicycle in 2001 and this summer I used it in one sprint triathlon, 3 35+-mile charity rides, and numerous weekend rides.

A Kitchen-Aid standing mixer we bought in 1978. We gave it to our youngest daughter to use six years ago. She finally replaced it this year.

Wow, I thought the stuff I've had for 10-12 years was old! The oldest things I have are a straightening comb that belonged to my Great Grandmother. It's probably older than I am and I don't know why I still have it, haven't needed one in many years. I guess I've kept it just because my Great Grandmother gave it to me. I also have a cast iron skillet my Grandma gave me when I first moved out on my own. She only used cast iron skillets and that one might be as old as or older than me too. I do still use it.
I bought the tables in my living room when I still lived with my Mom so I've had them over 20 years. I still have the matching coffee table, but it's in my attic. I also have a long, terry cloth robe that my daughter wishes I would throw away. I've had it about 15 years, one elbow is worn out, and I have other robes, but I'm still not ready to part with it. Whenever I'm chilly, I put on my old, familiar robe. Every day in the winter lol. I've had my bedroom furniture about 13 years. I can't think of anything else that I've had since before I bought my house 12 years ago.
Oh I have one! My Aunt and my Mom bought me a nice microwave when I was pregnant with my son. He's 20 now. Even though my house had a a built in microwave, I preferred my old one. The built-in was a victim of a kitchen fire and it's been replaced with a range hood. I still use the old one.

I have a mixer I bought when I first moved out on my own when I was 18 years old. And our Oster Toaster that we received as a wedding gift is still going strong. Our 21 year anniversary (married - together 26 years) is this month. It also fits Bagels.

Wow, this got me thinking. I have an old wheel-barrel that was my grandfathers. He got it from his grandfather before him. We used to joke the wheel-barrel came over on the boat from Germany with him. It has to be at least a 120 years old. There's a great story with it too. Grandpa lived on the East side of Chicago. Sometimes when it rained too much the storm sewers would back up in the basement. Grandpa's solution was to pour another layer of concrete. This same wheel-barrel was used to mix and haul all of that, one load at a time. The loads were so heavy grandpa kept blowing out the tire, so he changed the tire rigging and installed a more industrial heavy duty tire. By Grandpa's accounts he poured at least an extra foot of concrete over the years. I love using this wheel barrel when gardening, it's stable and a workhorse. However, if the tire ever needs replacing I think I'm doomed

I have my Mom's old pink hand mixer. I asked her about it and she said her MIL gave it to her in 1958.
DH has his great uncle's beaver skin mittens. They were used when he made house calls as a country doctor and traveled by horse drawn carriage. They are long, must have covered his entire forearm.

I have my grandmothers pots and pans. She had a huge set (5 kids) and I bet they're from the late 30's/early 40's. I plan on passing them down to my own (unborn) children- they're a work horse!
