Dang, I will have to tell Abby that she is smaller than she looks in the mirror. It takes one of us to launch her butt, but whatever.

Southern - too funny! I think a medium dog roughly goes up to about 60 lbs. Give or take some. I was saying that I think my daughter needs a dog in the 50-60 pound range so that it's big enough to go on runs with her, and yet small enough to be in a smaller space if need be. And for what it's worth - I think a 130 pound dog is large also

I think of our 90 pound dog as medium, but then I think of my aunts 180 pound dog as large.

Geez, what kind of dogs do you guys have, and how much do they eat? I think I'd have to get a part time job to keep them in kibble

We have a malamute husky/chow mix.
My aunt had a Labrador/Great Dane mix.... Think a Labrador built but a large Great Dane size.

Cute pictures. So DH and I talked obliquely about dogs in our future. We did this in the car with kids, so oblique was the way to not have them begging for a dog today. We're thinking 2 years and after we do Disney. I told him some of the suggestions from here and he thought that sounded ok. I don't think he wants to do the puppy stage either.

Cass, I couldn't open yours, but the others - wow. I think my little guy would be an appetizer for one . He eats less than a cup a day, plus treats

We lost our old girl a couple of months ago and it was heart breaking for all of us....She had been such an important part of our lives and we adored her. There is a new puppy arriving on Saturday. Border Collie, well bred, beautiful little female. I like training and dog sports, so she will be primarily my dog to pursue one of my pleasures with......(like the other one). I have had Collies before, so know they can be a handful...and have experience of puppies. I've got mixed feelings though. I still miss the other one...and what if I can't bond with the pup? What if this isn't the right dog for us? I'm taking comfort from the fact that other people do genuinely love their animals the same as I loved mine. Have to say though she (my old dog) was a rescue and a bit of a nutcase. It took years to get her straight. I'll never know what happened to her but hope that by getting a puppy we can avoid some of that.

Nice guilt trip. We can't save every dog in shelters. I adopted a mutt from a shelter, but I don't think someone should feel that they have to adopt a mutt if they have their heart set on a particular breed.

I adopted a mutt from a shelter, but I don't think someone should feel that they have to adopt a mutt if they have their heart set on a particular breed. and I beleive it's 25% of dogs in shelters are purebred. You could get a brand new puppy before it's put down. and no, you can't save every dog, however, by adopting from a breeder that's yet one less dog that could have been saved. in a 2 second search on facebook looked at a border collie rescue in south carolina. 2 12 week old puppies, a 4 month old, a 6 month old, a 6 week old, and that is one rescue.

Maybe, maybe not. I looked for dogs for about 6 months and the majority of dogs at the SPCA/Humane Society were mutts. And purebred puppies were few and far between. I don't think someone should have to wait for a year or more in the hopes that the breed they're looking for shows up.
I can tell you that there weren't any of that breed that GRG wants, because her telling us about it was the first I had heard of it.
Yes, it is a wonderful thing to rescue an animal from a shelter, but if someone cannot find what they're looking for within a reasonable amount of time I am not going to make them feel bad for choosing to purchase their 4 legged family member.
ETA: I am in NYS. How and I supposed to get that puppy from SC up to here?

ETA: I am in NYS. How and I supposed to get that puppy from SC up to here? there is tons of volunteer transport available (which is one of the things I've volunteered for - I've driven dogs coming from FL going to NH, I've built runsheets for dogs going from GA to CA). You don't search the shelter for the dog you want, you search breed specific rescues...and if you do find a dog you want in a shelter not near you, you contact a rescue in that area and they pull the dog for you. there is a rescue for most breeds out there and they pull dogs from shelters all the time, from all over the country. go visit the facebook pages of some shelters in the south - one I'm familiar with put down 12 dogs on Tuesday due to space. tuesdays and fridays are euth days - so 2 days a week that animals are put down due to space issues. that's one shelter - you do the math.

There is more to adopting a dog than seeing it on Petfinder and bringing it home. There is no guarantee that someone who WANTS to adopt a dog from a rescue is going to be allowed to do so. I know because I applied to a rescue site that I found on Petfinder and was turned down because the person who ran the rescue did not like that I was planning on crate training. I can tell that you are passionate about rescuing dogs, and that is admirable. However, what I don't agree with is you trying to lay a guilt trip a specific poster (or two) because they do not choose to go that route. If you were to keep things to generalities then I wouldn't have a problem with you continuing your spiel.

Spell- what kind of dog sports do you do? I do agility with mine. I tried flyball but it wasn't for us.
As to the large dogs- normally 70+ is considered a large breed. I have a dog who is still considered large even though he's only 60#. He's a bit smaller than a great dane, but very sleek. Looks like a race horse.

I have never heard of anything so stupid. Unless you were planning on leaving a puppy in a crate for 10 hours a day, there should have been no objection. No fence or driving around in the back of the truck- sure. But not for crate training. You are better off not adopting from them. That is insane.

I thought so too, agile. But I really lucked out with our pup, so I guess it happened for a reason.

Abby Normal - we had a rescue that did not want to adopt to us because we go to dog parks. *shrug* The smaller rescue groups, especially ones that rescue only specific (and often less common) breeds, don't have a shelter and only use foster homes often have very specific rules. Sometimes the fostering family gets to choose whether or not someone gets the dog, and their reason can be as simple as they didn't like the car you drove.

ok, I guess I should have said it's wonderful that you're going to adopt from a breeder so that you can get a dog that has the perfect traits that you want and we can all bury our heads in the sand as to the harsh reality.
here is today's post from the shelter that put down 12 dogs on tuesday - all small kennels are full so puppies will be euthanized on friday unless rescued or adopted. sorry I know I couldn't sleep at night knowing I paid money to someone who deliberately had their dog produce a litter, YMMV.

I foster dogs for a local rescue. They do take the foster's opinion of the potential adopter into consideration, so if someone really gives me a bad vibe, they're not getting my dog.

Yes, because THAT is the only other possible answer. How about "I hope you and your new pup have a long and happy life together" ?We are all adults here and know what happens at shelters. Next you'll be playing the Sarah McLaughlin song....
