So SIL and I were chatting this weekend and the topic of facials came up.
I mentioned casually I've never had one and you would think it was like I've never lived.
She is absolutely convinced they help the skin stay clear, hydrated, etc.
I figure a bar of soap and some lotion does the same much cheaper.
But now that I'm getting a bit older I have to wonder if there are really any benefits. I don't have wrinkles yet, but it's only a matter of time.
Does that stuff really help?

I've never had one. I react to all sorts of skin products even stuff that's "hypoallergenic" and "100% natural". I'm hesitant to drop money on a facial and end up having to wear a paper bag over my head till the rash disappears. I'll stick with what I know works on my face. I don't care if I die looking my actual age.

Before I finally found a medication that cleared my skin up, facials helped keep my acne in check.

I think good daily care of your skin is more beneficial than one monthly facial. Now that I (finally at 40!) found good products that work on my skin, it is 10,000x better than what any facial could have done. (Full disclosure: I've never done regular facials...I've done maybe 3 in my life). A daily, heavy coverage of sunscreen is probably the best thing you can do for your skin.

They just irritate my skin....I agree that just good daily care should be enough....

Good daily skin care is likely to do more good than a facial. But I have had one and would likely get another. I consider it more like getting a massage. It's a nice treat every once in a while, and quite enjoyable.

I'm WAY too picky about my skin to have a facial. I agree with the others: keeping your skin clean and moisturized and protected from the sun consistently is worth much more than an occasional facial.
I refuse to wear any kind of foundation or cover up, etc. Because I take care of my skin I don't need those things. I do wear eye make-up and lip color, but that is it. It also helps to not touch your face often throughout the day. That just transfers germs and causes blemishes.
However, done correctly, a facial can be a special treat just like a massage, so there's always that benefit from them. Maybe you should try it just to see if you like it!

To answer the OP.. I've had a few facials but I've never felt they were really worth the money (I've always used certificates so never paid for one). For me, if I"m going to splurge on a spa treatment, it will be on a massage. I will pay you $1,000,000 to give you a facial.

I agree. Good daily care of your skin is the best. I use the St. Ives Apricot scrub about 3 times a week. I use Oil of Olay eye and face cream every night and oil of olay with SPF 30 in it during the day.

I had a facial last month with my SIL. It was a fun day out at the spa and the facial was relaxing and enjoyable. I didn't notice any difference to my skin afterward.

I've used Oil of Olay products my whole life and am glad so many posters here do as well, means I can't be that far behind the times... Their daily moisturizer is just right for my skin and their regenerist facial scrub three times a week plus daily washings with a Dove bar. I was just wondering if there was something else I should be doing. Sound like if it works, why change it. Now if I'm spending my money on a "treat" it's a pedi-massage all the way

I have to say, YM is a completely different demographic than I'm used to. I love facials - especially the warm hand and foot mitts. My skin feels fabulous afterwards. The spa that I love usually has at least a month wait for any kind of skin treatment.

Now if I'm spending my money on a "treat" it's a pedi-massage all the way maybe some eye cream at night to be proactive. I get a pedi every 4 weeks - not a treat. I got one at a spa once (not my usualy nail place) and didn't find it worth the cost at all.

I also use a really nice eye mask 3 times a week. I have been using it since 2006. I bought it on a cruise and have been using it ever since. I honestly couldn't tell you the name of it unless I looked at the bottle (it is a French product). I found it on Amazon once I finished what I bought on the cruise. One tube is around $70 and it last at least a year. Well worth the money.

Seriously, I just have major qualms about strangers handling my skin. Facials, no, massages, no - which is why I find it so interestering that I can get over strangers touching my feet and legs.

I like treating myself to a good facial every now and then. Like anything else, buyer must beware, they are not all the same. When I've had a good facial, my face has the most beautiful glow. Now, having said that, I look much younger than my age and I don't really do anything as far as skin care other than wash my face. I do use olive oil as a make up remover, but since I rarely have any on that isn't often. I do use a homemade scrub every so often, again this is rare.
On another note, if there are blackheads beneath the surface, a good facial will draw those out, which is why some people complain about breaking out afterwards. And, still others might break out from the products, but I can usually tell inferior products as soon as they hit my face.
I'm not big on strangers touching me or standing too close to me, but I'm okay with professional people touching me when I want/need their services.

SK, what products do you use? I've been using the Olay Regenerist line and their 15spf moisturizer and am pretty happy with it, but I"m always open to new suggestions. Everyone's skin is different so I wouldn't assume we could use the same products, but I've had FANTASTIC results with Paula Begoun's website. She's like a Consumer Reports for makeup and skin care. I use a combo of products she raves about as well as some of her own products. I can't say enough good things about her site. Look up the products you use and see how she rates them. BTW, she evaluates each ingredient in each product and whether it's an effective amount, whether it has more negative effects than positive ones, if the packaging is so crappy the ingredients are nullified before you even use it, whether your products is great but overpriced for what it is and there's a cheaper great option out there, etc. It's well worth spending some time on the site.

I'm a guy & probably shouldn't say anything........but I don't understand the woman attitude.
I want to look my age. If I have a wrinkle & earned the damn thing & I'm proud of it. My grey hair....I've earned all of them. Hell I'm so proud of them that I grew a matching beard. Old isn't a bad word it's an EXCUSE! I don't have to bite my tongue because I'm old. I don't have to do something that I don't want to because I'm old. You don't like it....get the hell out! (Gosh he's difficult, guess it's just the way old people become). I've got an aunt that has so damn many face lifts that I'm surprised that she doesn't have a gotee (however you spell it) she doesn't look young, she looks like an old lady that has had a lot of face lifts. I enjoyed every single "part" of my life & part of that enjoyment is looking the age I was. I enjoy my wife at her age & I could give less than a damn if she looked like a 21 year old or a 60 year old. I love her for more than her looks, a lot more. What's more I would be pretty damn ashamed of myself if someone's looks made any kind of a difference in how I felt about them. I say be comfortable with who you are & look the way you look. I have never understood the "thing" that women have about their looks. Basically if your a good person, your a good person. If your a bitch, looking like a younger bitch isn't going to be any better. (Off soap box now).
I just hung some clothes & thought of something else.
Really want to do something that makes you beautiful? Just smile. That's it. Nothing more needed & it doesn't cost you a thing.

Only poked around there a little bit, but several of the items I love have $$$$ meaning they're expensive for the size/quality. Couldn't find a way to get an alternative. Like one item is an oil I like, but the "you may like" is a tinted moisturizer. Yeah, don't need a tinted moisturizing to replace the moisturizing oil I put on at night. Maybe I just need to use it more to figure out how to come up with substitutions. Glad to know none of the stuff I use is rated poor though!

@oldtex - men give themselves mini-facials every time they shave. A man and woman of the same age will not normally LOOK the same age (IMHO). When men age, they become "distinguished". When women age some of us become more refined, but society seems to value youth much more in the female gender then experience. Personally, I'm not really concerned about every wrinkle or age spot. I've earned the grey hairs etc that I've got. But, I do want to keep my skin looking as nice as I can and really don't need to show more wear and tear than I've actually encountered. I get what you're saying, but I do want to take good care of my skin so the years don't have to show through any more than necessary. ETA - just for you Tex!

Thecaptain half of how old you are is how you feel. The other half of how old you are is how you think. Only 10% of how old you are is how you look (50+50+10 = 110, I know). Address the first 2 & don't worry about the last one because it's the least important. I fully expect that on my death bed I'll goose my wife if I get the chance. (I would love for the last sound that I hear on this earth to be her squeal in surprise).

Interestering - now I have a lot of banner ads for skincare products running up top.
That and 7-eleven ads...

I don't like any of that kind of stuff and have never had one. I thought about it because the girl that cuts my hair swears by them but I've never followed through. I just use Oil of Olay products. One for day and one for the evening. I get a lot of compliments on my skin (but I'm sure it's a "for your age" kind of thing) and I spent most of my life out in the sun way too much so it must be working. I don't look like a raisin yet and I probably should.

I now get hydro facials and I love them. Instead of squeezing crap out of my face, she uses a vacuum thing and sucks them out. Much gentler on your skin and no red skin afterward. Plus, my face looks great and unlined for about 72 hours, an added plus! At my age I need moisturizer and it delivers it big time.

I've had three facials. They are all in the last two years. My husband treated me to the first one for my birthday. I thought it was a fabulous experience. Then, that girl moved away. The second girl did an okay job compared to the first girl. I went to someone closer to home for the third time. It was not as great of an experience. I'd really like to get another one, but I need to find a pace to go.
