Sorry, I haven't. I would say thought that the cost would be totally depend on the COL in the area that your living. I would assume that if you live in a HCOL area you might pay double or even triple what I would pay (because it's cheap where I live).

Not recently. 30+ years ago.
We borrowed $7500 and between a handyman neighbor and DH and I, built a 24x40 garage. Room for both cars and a good sized workshop for DH.
We lived in snow country so he also had a great wood burning stove. It was an antique caboose stove.
Whatever you decide to build, add to it. Otherwise it will never be big enough.

DF wants to add another stall to our existing two. I'm hoping he doesn't get the variance. I'm sure it will be 25-35 grand. Just so he can have two cars.

40k. It's large enough for an RV. The stem wall was already there along with sewage, electrical line and plumbing. We hired out the concrete floor and framing. DH put on roof, walls, painted, electrical, dust collection system, huge garage door, small heat pump, insulation, drywall.
Even if you do the labor yourself materials can be quite expensive.

This estimate is kind of horseshoes and hand grenades quality, but I usually think of basic garage space as costing about $10K per parking space, or about $50 per square foot. Ths would include a concrete slab, structure, and enough wiring to run a light fixture and a garage door opener. It also assumes that no grading work needs to be done, that the distance to a power source is only a few feet and does not include a driveway to access the garage. Start adding plumbing, lots of electrical for shop space, heat, drywall, insulation, or architectural features beyond a basic garage, and the cost can increase significantly.

Everyone - I really appreciate the feedback.
DH is starting to get the "lets build a garage" gleam in his eyes. We currently have a one bay unit that's not used since it's almost too narrow for a car.
The prices some have posted here are substantial enough that it may need to wait longer.

I haven't built one, but likely will in the next 2 years. I've already priced it all out. Attached is going to run me about $13K, detached will be about $8K. (differences primarily in a detached will not match the cedar siding nor the shingles we currently have on our house, which I'd want to match if attached. As well as the cost to cut open the drywall to install a door to the garage, framing is already done as i did that when I built onto the house a few years ago.)
That price is me doing most of the work though. Attached would be about 35x30. Detached would be smaller at around 20x25.
The real issue is what do we do with the dog who has his own area inside the current garage and an attached run. Stupid dog!

Heh, Heh. We don't play the lottery either.
While I TOTALLY understand that a nice garage is necessary for some folks, in our case we have plenty of storage, just no place to put the cars. Our house is very comfortable for us.
Plus, I'm of the mindset oft do you REALLY want to spend $20-40k to erect a building to cover a depreciable asset?
I think the real issue with me is we're saving for college, retirement, trying to buy our first rental property.
There are many places where the money could be put to better long term use.

I would not build a garage just to house my cars. That's just my opinion.
