There are a lot of changes going on at the company where I work. One huge on-going project which means a change from what is basically a 40 hour operation to a 24/5 operation. Some people are changing jobs, lots of new people will be hired. This is all leading to a bunch of speculation and second guessing and basically sour grapes from the clerical staff - two of whom work across the hall from me. Under normal circumstances they are both nice people - but right now I am so sick of listening to them complain about who got what job and who gets paid what and who isn't needed (according to them). It's just amazing how much they think they know about jobs they have never done.
Ok - RANT OVER. (I think)

Griping is terrible! But it sounds like your company is growing/expanding and they should be thankful. Where I work we had ~30 people on site, laid off 3 before Christmas, so everyone had to pick up their jobs, since then 3 more quit, so more juggling and we are not hiring replacements.
The worst one is that our receptionist left. We get plenty of package deliveries and truck deliveries and we now have to share responsibility for answering the door. That sucks!

Yes absolutely they should be thankful - a little over a year ago we were all fearful for our jobs as our company was up for sale, now this new company came in - gave us jobs and is growing the business. I think it's an exciting time to be here.
I actually wasn't happy here at first, because I took a huge salary cut and my job here wasn't nearly as interesting or challenging as my job at the old company was, but I'm changing jobs (within the company) soon. I guess that makes it easier for me to be happy. But, even when I was unhappy, with the exception of one manager who was a reference for me when I was job hunting, nobody here even knew I was unhappy. I doubt that I would have been given the job that I'm about to take, if I had been griping like they are.

I feel for you because I absolutely hate to hear constant griping. It doesn't do any good and if someone is seriously that unhappy then they should just keep it to themselves and look for work elsewhere. If it is a serious issue that can be solved them go to your supervisor and talk about it or have a team meeting to try and work through the problem, otherwise shut it At my old place of employment we had a negative nancy that ended up getting promoted. She complained constantly and was always in the supervisor's office daily because "somebody" did something she didn't like. Typically she would pick one person and complain about them for a few weeks. When she saw that she wasn't going to be able to get this person fired then she would move on to someone else. The only conclusion I can come up with as to why she was promoted is because our supervisor had the exact same type of personality. She would pick one person and make their life a living hell until they quit. When that person left she was on to someone else. I often wondered if she sat up nights thinking up ways to make people miserable. She pretty much left me alone because I have a strong personality. She tended to pounce on the weak.

Change is hard, and people hate it. It never goes without fussin'. It is just people's way of relieving stress about the situation.

Oh - absolutely not. I'm just trying to justify my constant bitching and moaning.

If they're across the hall, there must be a door you can shut so you don't have to hear it

We are going through growing pains at my workplace and there is some bitching and moaning between departments as people figure out their new roles. My phrase lately has been " The kids are not playing nice in the sand box". I told the head of the other department that " Mom and Dad" might have to get involved. Now he just calls and says " Mom, it's Dad. The children are fighting again."
Things are starting to get better. But it's a painful process.

I'll be glad when we get to the better place - actually starting my new job might come first - once that happens my office will be in a different area - then I'll get to hear the union people's complaints.

One thing they should not be talking about is who gets paid how much to do what. That is a matter of confidentiality and has to stop. Around here if I did that I wouldn't have a job to complain about.

Later - they don't really know - these aren't people in payroll. They are just guessing. And then making judgments about who is over and underpaid based on their guesses. When you think about it, it's really kind of comical.

Are we going to have a WWE smackdown between Swamp and Waffle. One asks why clerical people are not trusted, and the other complains clerical people drive them batty. I smell a cick fight of epic proportions brewing . Let's at least get them in bikinis and mud first .

LOL Phoenix. I love Swamp - I don't want to fight her. Besides, nobody wants to see this old body in a bikini - trust me on that.
