Call it vehicle creep. What features of your car or truck will you not compromise on? Either something you have or something you wish you had gotten. I am not really thinking anything that is standard in the bottom of the line new models, like airbags, but something that is an upgrade. Something that you could safely get from point A to point B without, but refuse to give up.
It is time to replace the old reliable Corolla, so DH and I are car shopping. The corolla was as base as base could be. Now we are in a spot where we can upgrade a bit, but not get everything within our price range. This is DH's car so he gets to decide what compromises to make and it is interesting to see what his nonnegotiables are versus what mine would be.

I can't think of anything, I drove a very base car for most of my driving life. That being said, I REALLY like that thingy that let's me see what is behind me when in reverse - I can see it on my screen. Very helpful.

When I was buying my last car I had four main requirements that I would not compromise on: 4 doors, roomy back seat, big cargo area, all-wheel drive. Those are absolutely must haves for me.
Tenn, It's interesting you mention "roominess" along with SUV. I found in all of my test drives that a lot of SUVs were really big and yet felt really cramped inside and had very little cargo space.

Sitting "tall" on the road. I have a mini-SUV (a Ford Escape) and I'll never go back to a low-slung sedan.

I don't think I'd want to go back to no power locks or windows, but even that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if I found a good deal.
The rest beyond the base stuff is just fluff as far as I'm concerned (and I drive an Odyssey with every option they have).

Now that I have a new car that doesn't have all the features of my old car, I realize what I miss. Main thing - programmable seats! OMG I need those memory settings for when DH decides to drive my car and move my seat all over the place!
I also miss my heated seats, but not quite as much.

Mid, I WISH my car had crank windows in the back. It is soooo not fun when my 3 yr old starts opening a window and it's pouring rain outside

Air conditioning.
My DH's car has a navigation system and I love it. I certainly can live without it, but I've considered seeing how much it would be to get a satellite radio and nav system built in. I can't justify it, but I love having it. It helps even with something simple. It helps estimate how long we will be in the car, etc. When it comes time to get a new car for me, if we have the money to get the navigation, I will.

I once rode with my boss in his fancy SUV and thought the backup camera was a non-needed item. A few days later I backed into my son's car in the driveway. Backup camera would be nice!
Where I live A/C is a MUST not a luxury. I'm not sure if they sell cars without A/C.
Power windows and locks are definitely nice.
My boys had an old vehicle (1986) that they drove a few years ago. I didn't have a reminder that you left your lights on. They quickly learned how to jump start a car. I'm pretty sure all cars come with that now.

I would love to have a built in GPS - but it's not going to be a deal breaker the next time I go car shopping.
My one must have is a mini van with seats light enough that I can take them out - or that fold down flat . It has to give me enough space to pack up a whole booth full of display tables and merchandise in one trip. (for antique shows).

- USB port - gotta have my tunes - Comfortable/adjustable seats - Manual transmission - Convenient/adequately-sized cupholders. Nothing like hitting the brakes and watching your 32oz soda explode all over the dash.
Re: factory-issue vs. upgrades - My current car is a 2013 and has a pretty advanced media system, keyless entry, power everything - but crank windows in the back. I didn't even know they MADE those anymore... My son said that they were driving and the guy next to him gave a sign to crank down your windows. I wondered how many people actually have crank windows anymore (he does).

I have a super base model 1999 Civic (power locks and windows were standard by then, but the manual windows and locks were a special request by the previous owner) and I've owned this car for 10 years now, so any sort of feature is luxurious to me! But I would like a cd player that came installed with the car, an mp3 input, and power locks and windows.

I want a remote start so bad! I asked for that for Christmas and DH laughed at me Having dealt with two power windows breaking on my Corolla, crank windows wouldn't be so bad. I loved the heated seats in our Cadillac and miss them during the winter. Other than that I don't care. I hardly even listen to the radio, so no need for audio/line-in or sound system for me.

It is soooo not fun when my 3 yr old starts opening a window and it's pouring rain outside On every car I've had that's had power windows there's a button on the driver's windows control that locks the windows - I think it locks all but the driver's? Or maybe just the back windows? It's not labeled that clearly, but I would have thought every car would have that.

Since I bought my Subaru, I've decided that all my cars are going to be AWD. TD put satellite radio in it for my birthday one year and would like to always have that now too.

for me, real time traffic gps
it reroutes me through major traffic issues
as in the case of this morning, when a truck overturned on the beltway with a hazmat issue
15 mile backup.....and the feeder roads were all jammed too
with my 55 mile commute....it saves me so much time it is unreal

I've spent the last 9 years driving a car with crank windows, manual locks, a tape deck, no AC, no GPS, no Bluetooth, no heated/cooled or motorized seats, and a manual transmission. It's the most basic model of the base model sedans produced by the manufacturer the year I bought it and has no options. I didn't even pay the extra $150 for the smoker's package. I thought it was just replacing the little change drawer thing in the dash with an ashtray. I didn't realize at the time that it was also wiring the cigarette lighter, so that doesn't work and I can't charge my damn phone.
This is the nicest car I've ever driven. All the ones before it were POS's with a ton of miles on them. This one is a POS too, but at least it was brand new when I started driving it. Next time I'm springing for AC, leather seats, and power windows/locks though. 130,000 miles down, 70,000 to go before I upgrade.

Can't think of anything. I currently drive a 10 year old carolla and it's pretty basic.
I do have some wants for my next car. I want something a bit bigger, with all wheel drive and leather seats. Basically I'm envisioning a crossover like a Ford Escape or a Toyota Rav 4. But all of those are wants and nothing I can't say I will absolutely not give up.

My first 2 cars were almost as old as I was and they eventually crapped out one of which was on the middle of a Southern California freeway and the steerling locked up when I was in the left lane. That said they were both free and got me from point A to point B. The next car I got was totalled within 6 months after an elderly driver T-boned me pulling out of a parking lot onto a major street but luckily for her she wasn't a split second earlier because I would have hit her on her driver side. The last 8+ years I've had the same car that I brought brand new and it has kicked some ass but I admittedly don't have a lot of miles on it currently at 78K. It's paid off and in great shape so I plan to drive it into the ground. The only thing I want out of my next car is AWD even though I live in SoCal and maybe need it once a year for a trip, possibly more room (hatchback or SUV) and 25+ MPG city.

Taking kids to the beach is the worst. You can never vacuum all the sand back out of cloth seats. Ever. Now that I pick them up from swim practice constantly the cloth is soaking up chlorinated water all the time and it reeks of it when it's been parked in the sun for a while.
