I saw the show Shasta, and that's just bad news all around. I hope you have recourse and stay safe.

This is interesting. Since it is just Shasta's truck they show (not Shasta herself) and don't use her voice, I wonder if they get around the privacy laws that way. Can they say that they don't show her or even use her voice, so there is no breach of privacy. I wonder if the truck is an extension of the person, especially since it is a recognizable truck...
Shasta, keep us in the know about what happens.

Ouch. I watched the link through the part where the show strongly implies they are getting a hot tip from someone in a dark colored SUV. No idea if there are any legal issues here, but it was pretty nasty of the show editors to do that. Very deceptive, since it's clearly done to imply that not only is the person in the SUV giving the tip, but the officers are having an extended interaction with the person in the SUV giving the tip, which further gives the impression that the person in the SUV is working closely with the officers.
Unless a person knows Shasta and is also one of those people that is good at recognizing people by voice, that person is definitely going to think that Shasta gave the tip. Which was clearly the show's intention. Very nasty.

The thing is, the road they filmed me from is our PRIVATE ROAD. We pay to maintain that road, it is not paved and it is not county maintained, and as far as I know they were not given permission to film here.
It's not like I am talking to them in the middle of the highway, they are on our private road and I stopped that day wondering what this large white truck was doing parked on the easement of my property! Usually just teenagers out partying, or someone legitimately lost. (Our road system is a bit odd and things aren't marked too well.)
It's just wrong. I don't know if there is anything I can do about it, but it is still wrong that they can make you look like a drug informant on your own private property and you can't do anything about it.....

I said what I said earlier to call reference to the difference between what may hold water legally, and what is right. If they showed my house (even without the actual numbers, someone familiar with the area could put the pieces together) and dubbed some nut job voice spewing nasty stuff, people might still draw conclusions. People are crazy! One of the actresses in "The Walking Dead" received death threats from the fans of another actor, because her character wounds his character in one episode. He had to post a pic to twitter of the two of them together shaking hands, explicitly saying that they are good friends, and that the scene wasn't real. People are crazy! ...:::"But the difference is that Shasta was filmed on her own property, she did not attend an event so there is no implied consent.":::... In this case, the event came to her. I'm not saying the situations are exactly the same. It may very well have been an editing room goof. I'm just pointing out that its harder and harder to do things these days without ending up on camera. The Facebook "privacy is dead, get over it" attitude becomes more and more prevalent every day.
...:::"Right now, my employer does a lot of work in the community where pictures are taken of the patients treated. Each picture that is used in our literature has a signed consent form attached to it. No signed consent, the picture is not used.":::...
Its refreshing that your employer seems to run a tighter ship than this Discovery crew. This fact does not help Shasta though, as the damage has been done. ...:::"Getting out of town is easier said than done with someone of limited means.":::...
Duh. But we aren't just talking about a weekend away because she has job stress. I'd tend to think that if one is truly fearful for one's life, one will find the means.

Which was clearly the show's intention. Very nasty. I also watched the viedo from the link Shasta put up. While the voice definitely changes from the "Hi" to the rest because they seem to only show the side of the truck/SUV it was hard to know if they were supposedly now talking to another occupant. I'm using DSL so I only played it once. For me it was hard to tell the difference between the side of that vehicle and I think they showed those people in a blue truck as well. I'm sure though people in your area like you said are better with identification of vehicles. I'd ask for a retraction to be placed on screen in one of the future episodes basically saying that the Discovery people spliced film in error and that made it appear the person who said "Hi" in the truck is the same as the informant. We want to apoligize for any confusion, the error is ours, blah blah. You will probably need to get your lawyer to do that for you now though because you apparently in writing called the producer names. I understand your anger and I did something similarly stupid a few weeks ago in the heat of anger. Try to assume it is a mistake of editting and get a retraction posted on the program as soon as reasonable. You can try writing a letter apologizing for your first one saying that the edits as done likely have put you in danger and you are sorry for your original wording, however, you need a retraction/correction put in the very next episode for the Integerity of the show and your own safety. 'I hope you will rectify this very dangerous error at your earliest convenience as I am concerned enough for my safety I am currently interviewing lawyers.' I wish you the best. I did feel for that guy from Grace Farms giving up his guns. For most of us not in rural areas with big pieces of land it would be less of a big deal but with that guy trespassing on their land constantly I can see the worry.

One of the show regulars answered my FB message from yesterday. He said they all had issues with "editing" of what was said/not said by them. He said it is common to have said one thing and they edit you to appear to have said something else. He also said he wondered who that truck belonged to and that it is a big problem that people will think I am an informant. Lovely....

Does the show have a website where people comment?

I can't say much of use, but I can say this is not right, Shasta. You should not be in this position of it appearing that you are an informant.

If I had not read this thread I most certainly would think that the person in the blue truck was working closely with the cops here. Not only that, they made it look like Shasta was looking for a way to get the cops involved by flagging them down and making sure that she passed on as much information as possible. This is really bad. Stay safe Shasta

I found the contact information online for a law firm who is suing Discovery for fraud over something similar. I am contacting them to ask their suggestion and if they might be willing to take another case...
Mexican cartels mark you for death if they think you ratted on them. I don't know how this crap can be legal...

Just because you pay to maintain it, it is not paved, and it is not county maintained, does not make it a private road (private meaning they have no rights to drive it). It may very well be a private road, but those things by themselves do not make it private. My parents have the same thing.
I'm not sure the private road theory is all that important though. I'm just saying, you may not have the rights you think you do to the road just because you maintain it.

For sure. My subdivision maintains our road. We just replaced it to the tune of 90k. No money from anyone else but us in the subdivision. People still drive on it. I guess I don't get the issue. You grow pot in your backyard, you buy a prescription for it, and so do others in your area. So why is anyone going to be after you? Obviously this is the worst kept secret and nothing is ever done about it so what's the problem?

If I were you, Shasta, I would keep my mouth shut (and my typing fingers still) until I had spoken with an attorney. Anything you say (or type) can be used against you. The best thing to do is keep quiet.
