Haven't read about it until now. Per the article you posted:
The official, who was identified only by his family name Gu, told China News that the practice of dumping dead pigs into rivers lingers among some pig farmers in the city of Jiaxing. "We are still introducing the practice of collecting dead pigs," Gu was quoted as saying.
It's pretty scary that in 2013 that practice still exists in China. It probably will be at least a few more days before we find out much more. Hopefully it isn't some bad disease issue.

Those dead pigs are probably the least disgusting thing in that water.
I had friends who sailed in the China summer olympics a few years ago and the water was so polluted that anyone who fell in got deathly ill. Even people who just got splashed by a wave ended up with nasty infections if they had an open cut.
The water there is horrifying. I'm guessing the only reason we're not hearing about huge increases in deaths from cancers, immune related illness, etc is that the healthcare is still so rudimentary that those statistics aren't available and many just die instead of getting any treatment.

I have watched a few doc. movies on farm contamination run off in the U.S. and it's pretty nasty as well. I am sure China is far ahead on polluted waters but we're not far behind. Hope they have really good water purification or I think a lot of people are going to get very sick!

There was a story out a couple weeks ago about a person being found decomposing in a Southern CA hotel's drinking water tank.

The "in 2013" comment is spot on. Its easy to forget just how good we have things here in America. The idea that a river could be so polluted that it would cause illness just to be splashed with is scary!

There was a story out a couple weeks ago about a person being found decomposing in a Southern CA hotel's drinking water tank. I remember that. I also remember the "authorities" said there was no danger - the water was "safe." Yep, no reason to doubt the safety if an "official" says it's safe....

I like how most of the disaseter stories out of China always start with some low number - like 3 babies poisoned by melamine in milk or the 1000 pigs in the river or 2 people dying of 'flu' only to have the magnatude expand rapidly over the course of 24 or 48 hours.
I wonder if it's some sort of 'agreement' with the news agencies that release this kind of info and 'agreements' with foriegn news agencies as well... cause we NEVER hear about the smaller scale stuff that actually stays smaller scale and I'm sure there's alot of small scale stuff that happens... How come the news agencies know to splash some 'small scale' stuff and not other 'small scale' stuff?

Why was the woman in the water tank? I'm wondering if there some new 'trend' among the younger set who travel alot - a guy climbed out on the roof and a chimney on top of a Chicago hotel "to get photos'" and fell into the chimney. He died before he could be rescued. I thought there was another youngin' in New York City who managed to get onto the roof of a hotel and also managed to accidentally kill themselves... Why the spat of people going up on roofs of hotels.... Or is that something that tourist routinely do...

They're up to just shy of 14,000 pigs pulled from the river now, per Washington Post. Still no explanation from the gov't other than the tally.

Smithsonian is reporting this: But just as officials said they were finishing up with recovering the last of the carcasses, dead ducks joined the swine in polluting China’s rivers. Locals in Sichuan Province spotted around 1,000 of the birds floating down the Nanhe River, the BBC reports. *-*-* What the hell's going on there? First pigs, now birds?

I didn't mean to post the link, it apparently came with the bit I grabbed. But I'm glad you found it helpful. I found the Smithsonian site about 6 months ago and I've been enjoying it.
