It really all depends on what kind of company you work for. I do marketing for an engineering firm. None of us sell crap, and we literally sit at a desk all day (or in a meeting all day formatting powerpoint presentations. Our job is to put together the proposals to win public works jobs, and then to put together the interview presentation if we are selected as one of the top 5 firms. We also go to conferences and network/socialize/work a booth. I also do some graphic design work. I am the worst person EVER at sales, but I have managed to work my way into marketing without a degree at my company, so I must not be that bad at it. In my line of work, sales and marketing are totally different.
If your daughter likes being creative, is detail oriented, and likes to write, she would probably really enjoy a marketing position in my industry. It can get cuthroat, and the hours can be horrendous if there is a deadline coming up way too fast, but its generally a fun job. The position here in norcal usually starts between $50-60k depending on the company and education. Some of the big wigs are making high 6 figures though. There are quite a few women in marketing. You just have to be able to hang with the big boys and not be afraid to speak your opinion on things.
If it interests her, she should definitely check it out.
