Sorry for the boat owners. That's a beautiful yacht, all right. You have beautiful views and a very nice house. Around here, deer carry deer ticks which can transmit Lyme disease, so having deer in backyards is not too popular. There is a big old buck with a rack antlers like a giant coat rack who lives in the woods in our sub with his harem. Nobody can touch him because he wisely lives within the city limits - no hunting. I haven't seen him in a few years but one fall morning, on my way ou of my sub, he burst out of the trees with four does, and almost hit me. It was foggy, but luckily I was going slowly. Last week, on the morning of our big storm, I saw a coyote trotting down our little street. It was ghostly-looking in the falling snow, but it had that hunter's head and trot. It was no dog. My brother said it was a mini urban wearwolf. He could be right . Stolen sailboats, though, that's a new one.

I'm sure I'll read more about it in our local rag.

Very sad. Here's the latest gossip: Posted Today, 09:32 AM Yes, it's in the yard at Bay Marine in Richmond. Some damage certainly to the rudder, haven't seen pix of keel yet. Salvor Tim Parker has said the boat was taking water thru the rudder shaft and that the engine was "burned up."
Posted Today, 03:16 PM FastBottoms, on 05 March 2013 - 09:32 AM, said: I think we can all agree they would have been much better off if they had stolen a Camaro instead of a boat. My guess is the engine cooling water intake seacocks were closed. How would they even know that they should be checked and opened? Guess number two is that the engine seized off Daly City (the loop-de-loop) and they drifted down to Pacifica. We have all noticed how the sails are all very neatly furled (i.e. never unfurled by our pirates) so it never dawned on them that maybe they could have, you know... "sailed" somewhere other than crash-landing on the beach. Posted Yesterday, 11:28 PM I think I knw where the Pale Ale went, this is part of their AIS track Posted Yesterday, 11:51 PM I was out there from 0830 (about 45 minutes after the call from PB), until 1500. The boat came aground about 100m north of Taco Bell. In the intervening 10 hours, she moved about 300 yds south...iow towards the rocky section of Linda Mar beach. The asshats that stole her refused assistance when getting her free might have been ez. 7 hours later they were ordered off of the boat and taken into custody.
AKAIK, Darling draws 11' with the keel fully retracted. When I last saw her, she was sitting in around 8' of water pivoting about whatever was left of her keel. Unfortunately, the bottom where she was sitting at the time is rocky...as she was moving towards the more rocky portion of the beach.

I was really surprised to read the ages of the 3 who stole the boat - all over 50... I guess I was expecting some drunk/high college students to have pulled off this stunt - especially since it seems the theives had no idea how to handle the yacht - not some dumb ass Boomers. Is there any chance the 3 pirates had some clue on how to sail the boat?
I'm not big on 'boats' and water terrifies me - but I have to admit feeling a bit of sadness about this - that was a mighty 'pretty' peice of engineering/art in my eyes and it seems they totalled it.
Do you think the 3 of them actually thought that this escapade would end well?
Are large expensive sail boats easy to steal?

The photos of the three pirates make them look like crack-heads which I'm sure they are. Yeah, the SA guys can be a pretty tough (and frankly sexist) crowd. One of them posted a picture of the woman - a mug shot from a prior arrest - that was very unflattering. The comments were along the lines of "she looks more 'meth skinny' than diet skinny" and "sometimes the reality of having a skinny blonde on your yacht just isn't as good as the fantasy..."

Update: Two of the suspects are being freed because of insufficient evidence that they knew the boat was stolen. Ummm riiiiiiiiiiiiight. I voluntarily sit on a boat which is stuck in the surf for hours (5?) being thrashed because I have NO IDEA it's stolen. ETA the other guy is being held on bail of $1M So the new story is that they met the guy down in Santa Cruz who told them that he inherited the boat and did they want to go on a night cruise with him. The DA states they can't prove the two other knuckle heads knew it was stolen. STILL not buying it!

Too funny - catching up on my AC360 podcast, and this yacht thief made Anderson Cooper' Ridiculist on the show. The thieves got some serious 15 minutes of fame.
