Just listening to the news this evening and it was announced that cell phone manufacturers in Europe are going to require that all cell phones use the same plugs if they're manufactured after a certain date.
Now, why can't we do something so thorougly logical? Why is it that my cell phone, my iPod, my DVD player, my Nintendo DS all have made it such that every time I travel, I need to carry along 4 different charge cords with me?

Because it is logical. Just like having umteen printer cartridges for umpteen different printers.

It's about the money. They want you to pay for 4 when 1 would do.
And there is also the built in 'obsoleteness' factor.

You really expect the companies to agree on a universal anything?

I don't even know how many chargers I take with me when I travel. If I took my DS that's 1, camera has recharge battery so another, bluetooth headset has one, and I have 2 cell phones and of course two different chargers. Then there's the adapter for my laptop. I think but I'm not positive that my gps and bluetooth headset could use the same charger. The phone thing's not by choice. I moved to a gated apt complex and you need a local phone number if you want to let people in the gate when its closed. Of course its not set up so they can just put your code in. They have to put your code in, gate calls you, I have to punch a button and hang up, and then the gate opens. I wasn't changing my number after 7 years so a new cell thats prepaid was the cheapest option.
