This whole thread is funny. Have you guys ever watched a t-ball game? Half the outfielders are playing in the dirt or doing cartwheels/handstands during the game. They're all screwing around on the bench, talking, playing games, whatever. Sure, there's usually a few kids on each team that are really focused on the game, but I'd imagine most of the kids on each team have no frickin idea what the score is. Same thing with soccer. There's always a few kids just running around, like literally playing tag and stuff with kids on the other team, that are only slightly aware of the fact that a ball is even on the field. There's no way they're keeping score in their head. That's the whole point of no score leagues for youngsters anyway. They're still learning how to play, and losing week after week while they're doing that is discouraging. Especially for the kids who are actually really into the sport but get stuck on a team with a bunch of the kids that aren't even paying attention to the game. Most of us were making the point that by the time a child is 5 they do know who won the game. My dd was a horrible player but still knew whether her team had my goals than the other...

I never said bad parenting. If it came across that way I apologize. I was reacting to a couple of people in page one who said that trophies and no-score leagues lead to spoiled, aimless children (I'm paraphrasing) and are leading to the downfall of America . So you spent 4 pages arguing with everyone because you disagree with me and Jen? That's kind of silly actually, I think her main beef is with Old Tex.........

Oh, and chess parents really are SCARY! They make the crazy little league parents look like total amatuers. I've watched little league parents chew their kids out for making a mistake during a game and felt bad for the kid. Some of the parents at chess tournaments make me wish I had CPS on speed dial.

And I was making the point that even at 5 and 6 even if they know the score it should not be the focusm. A score at that age is meaningless anyway. Everyone sucks and if you won it was because of one or two phenoms.

So to be clear, Loop doesn't like organized sports that keep score because they have asshole parents who make too big an issue out of winning, therefore no one should actually keep score...but get a bunch of nerds together for a chess game and it's ok to be cutthroat?

Exactly. They're similar to pageant parents except that pageant parents are living vicariously through their kids, chess parents think their children's lives literally rest on the outcome of every game. There's a reason there is a high rate of suicide amongst chess players.

Loop, I pride myself in being able to see the world in shades of grey, but you will absolutely NOT change my mind about this topic and any related ideals. I happen to think that you can teach kids how to play and have fun AND also have an element of competition. But if the kids are so unfocused on the game anyway, what's the point of even HAVING no-score leagues? It's also partly due to my disdain at parents who a) stick their kids in activities they hate because "it builds character" and b) think their kid is the best thing since sliced bread when they are actually average or below.

Trust me.. once softball starts and scores are being kept.. Loopy and Dark are going to be yelling, cheering and heckling the ump for making bad calls just like the rest of us do! DH, who is the most uncompetitive guy in the world who does not like sports got waaaaay excited over a diaper race DS was in when he was about 14 mos old. Excited to the point where he yelled at the newspaper reporter who got in DS's view of gramma, who he was running to........

Dark's gonna turn into Randy Marsh. I'm praying our kids will be artsy because I'll end up taking a bottle upside some league parent's head.

so should there be "no score" chess leagues? I think that's why parents get so freaky about their kids during chess matches. It's a one on one game with a super obvious winner and loser. If your kid loses, they can't blame a team mate, an ump, a bad call, whatever. They got out played by the other kid plain and simple. No hiding, no excuses, no inflating your ability. You always know exactly how much you won or lost by, where you stand within your club, etc. Even when you're just starting. Psychologically it's a brutal sport, especially because of the way chess games play out. One mistake during the mid game, and you don't barely lose, you get completely trashed. If the kid is a jerk he won't even go for the straight win, he'll stretch the game out and take you apart one piece at a time. You have to sit there losing piece after piece, with no way to do a damn thing about it, while everyone watches.

Loop, you're not seeing the big picture. But that's okay - we don't have to agree on this.

LOL on the diaper race. I have to say, this past winterball season I was yelling and cheering and having a blast. There were a couple of times that I might have yelled out something like "Oh come on, Blue...seriously" when he had a strike zone that changed with every pitch. There was actually and "editoral/opinion piece" in the local Sunday newspaper about overzealous sports parents, referring to DH. They didn't mention him by name, only because the reporter didn't know who he was, thank god, because he knows who I am.
