Ok, so maybe not nearly as cold as most of you (I'm in FL) but it's 28 here and still falling. The bad thing is my thermostat bit the dust about 10 last night. So no heat until I can get to the hardware store. I will NEVER have another digital thermostat again. It's been nothing but trouble since I replaced the a/c 5 yrs. ago.
Any suggestions on a good, but fairly cheap one?

I will NEVER have another digital thermostat again.
We have had a digital thermostat for about 5 years now & no problem (so far). Over the years I've found that the old kind sometimes have dead spots where they won't kick on the unit. I tend to think stuff like this is the luck of the draw. Some work great from day 1 & others suck from day 1. Some last forever & some die pretty quick. Good luck with whatever you replace it with!
Two days ago we had a cold front come in & the low was 19 degrees. It sucked (I'm not a fan of anything under 50 degrees). I think it's mostly gone now & expect (without checking) temps today to hit the upper 60's. This doesn't look like it's stacking up to be a cold winter. So that will save a few bucks on heating, which I like.

you may not be able to find the old style round or rectangular ones, they used mercury in the switch. i would suggest a digital one with the bare minimum of features and buy 2, one for a spare

Sorry sue. I love digital thermostats and never had any problems. They come with different features and prices. Maybe yours has a battery and it died? You can get a cheap manual one for about $25.

I have a programmable thermostat and the one time it stopped working, that's exactly what it was - the battery needed replacement and it hadn't been done before it completely died. Usually they have a little msg or indicator on the display showing when the battery is getting low. It's a Honeywell.

I checked the batteries, and they were new so that didn't help so I went to the hardware store at 9 this morning and bought a new digital one that said it could be installed in 5 mins. well, 30 mins. late I had it working. So much for saying never. It has just the basic features so hopefully it won't cause me any trouble for awhile.
I did realize that the old one was 6 years old. It was installed with I had the ac replaced and it just doesn't seem like it has been that long ago. It started giving me trouble a couple of years ago. When I tried to turn the temp up or down, the display screen would go blank for a while and then come back on. I wonder if there was a loose connection with the wires. Oh well, I have heat again.
It was kind of fun this morning opening presents with the kids wrapped in blankets. They left for their father's this afternoon and won't be back until Friday which is why we opened them this morning.
