so all these magazines say no more than a minute or 2 rest between sets....but for me on some exercises by the time I add plates from set to set can take a minnute or so by itself (like esp deadlifts)...... other exercises I try to rest no more than 2 minutes between sets, but somelike Deadlifts and squats I really have no choice.....does this make sense?
so what do you all do?

There is mixed opinion on this. I know Lon Kilgore and Mark Rippetoe recommend taking as much time as you need between sets to recover for your next one, especially on squats and deadlifts where you're lifting several times your body weight. They're the authors of Starting Strength and Practical Programming, and in both of those books they mention taking up to 10-15 minutes between heavy deadlift sets if you're doing sets near your personal best in those lifts.

I don't do anything like the weights you are talking about. I have restarted on Nautilus. I have started doing some type of low impact or aerobic move for up to one minute between sets. If I want to finish early I will alternate machines i.e. back extension to abs. Leg curl to leg extension. Bench press to leg press. An alternate plan is do 6 machines and 10 minutes on the precor or bike then 6 machines, etc. I watched the last part of Reebok 2012 Crossfit competition where Annie Thorsdautter won for the 2nd time. I don't recall who won the men's. I'm sure they have to pay U.S. taxes on that $250,000.

I would say this is a case of one size does not fit all. I honestly don't think that muck about it when I lift. I do try to take less time between sets when I'm doing a lighter weight with higher reps, it's the only way I feel they do much good. Less rest keeps the heart rate up and helps to really feel the burn on the lighter stuff. For my normal workout, I use medium to heavy weight for fewer reps. In that case, I usually have no more than two minutes(less than one song) between sets. Since most sets take less than a minute to complete(6-8 reps), I can usually complete a lift-rest cycle on one song. May seem kind of crazy, but with my ear buds in, it's the only way I can stay focused. I almost always finish in one hour. I will take longer if I do heavy legs, or extra abs.
