guess who's working on getting a rose by the end of next weekkkkkk I am praying to have my EF fully funded. I just need to keep it there and not touch it. I was very tempted to use my EF to pay off my lowest balance CC. However, I have to stop the cycle I'm on and that means not using my CC. I know if I pay it off quickly. I'll have to use it because I won't have any money. So I'm going to just work on paying my CC off slowly. I have 2 one is WAY too high.

Update:
antevasin: 11/1/13 $500.03 (1/1/13 = $0; Goal = $1,000.00)
Total amount remaining to goal: $499.97
Total percentage saved: 50.00% Total percentage remaining: 50.00%
I am shifting around some of my savings goals as I am working torwards paying off some school bills and while savings is important, I want to focus on more towards eliminating debt, but I did not want to neglect savings all together, so I'm still socking aside much less, setting asside smaller savings goals as I work towards the repayment.

I keep going back and forth and have finally decided to make these 6 my main focus on savings. I decided to follow the YNAB (you need a budget) plan by living on the previous month's paycheck. I can't wait to get a whole month ahead so I won't have to match the bills and savings to each paycheck and can just do it once a month. I hate calculating things bi-weekly and since my new plan will only need 2 checks each month when there is a 3 paycheck month that WHOLE check is an extra check. I made an extra payment on my Student Loan D and they only took out interest for this last payment..so I'm going to save up and pay the entire thing off. So annoying that they didn't apply any principle to it with the last payment. I made 2 extra payments so I imagine my Dec 7 payment will be interest only, also.

Serious this time 11/22/13, $12,541 (6/15/13 $1,711, Goal $13,745)Again, it looks like a good update this time, although I haven't updated for six weeks (three pay periods). With 2 paychecks left until the end of the year, it looks like I should reach 100% in all categories. I have one more birthday to buy for this year. I'm budgeting $800 for Christmas gifts; I have two gifts purchased already. (I said I was budgeting $600 but forgot to add in my brother and sister at $100 each.) I seem to be setting aside the right amount for the other things. Next year I'm going to add retirement savings and HSA to these categories. As everyone suggested, I will track what is deposited and forget about market fluctuations. I am thrilled that between IRAs and my 401(k), I have reached another milestone. It's still way under what I need, but a milestone is a milestone, right? Somehow I don't seem like such a financial train wreck when I post updates here. I have the week off and expect to get to Ombud's financial calendar chores for November, and start setting savings goals for 2014. Happy saving, everyone, and happy Thanksgiving!

thanks ladies for motivating me to get my roses.
I have a question. Do any of you still use ING Direct which is now Capital One 360? I'm thinking of going back to them for my various goals. I've had $4 in there since they changed their name and don't have any extra charges and my accounts weren't closed. I'm just wondering if it's safe to go back or rather use it again since I never left.

sealy, I have used ING Direct/Capital One 360 continuously since 2006 and through the transition. Never had a problem. I love it!

Thank you Serious. I still have my accounts there but haven't put anymore money in there in over a year due to the transition. I'm going to use it again though for my house and vacation fund.

I really got off track this year. After my dad died, and my siblings exhibited their already known personality traits, it became a really tough year. I did meet some of the goals. I met the 2013 trips, car savings, and presents. I did not meet the RA goal. I had some big time medical expenses, and auto repairs. You see, a professional thief did some damage to my vehicle. Between the medical, and auto, I was out $3k more than I had budgeted for medical and auto repairs. I am trying to get back on track. I will have to delay the 2014 Washington trip to another year. My emergency fund is now up to 15 1/3 months. YAY! At the end of this month" Car savings: 3600 RA :2500 gifts:225 trip last March:400 trip last June:600 by coming way under budget grits: $7325 11/28/2013 Goal $12225

Congratulations to every single one of you for making progress. Those who met their EF goals, woo hoo! I have deducted my Seattle trip from the balance(not happening next year either), and it lowers my Total goal to 10,825. I just found more money. YAY! I could have saved for Seattle but I bought much needed furniture instead. I have no dining furniture not even a tv tray. I have no dresser or chest of drawers. I have no table by my bed for my meds. I bought all of it used. High quality stuff. I could have gone to Washington next year for two weeks. The furniture was way more important. grits $10,825 Goal $10825.

Here's my current thinking on savings goals for 2014.
Gifts, $2,600 Insurance, $5,600 Pet Care, $3,120 Utilities, $520 Weekly Savings, $1,378 Taxes, $5,300 Retirement, $28,800
Gifts include birthdays, Christmas, weddings, and charitable donations but don't include contributions taken from my paycheck (i.e, United Way).
Insurance is what I pay on a life insurance policy on my XH. I get a part of his pension when (if) he retires, and if he dies first I get nothing. So this guarantees some future income from him.
Pet Care includes the vet and pet sitters. My dog is 11 and not particularly healthy, so this could change during the course of the year.
Utilities, a cushion for my gas/electric, water, and cell phone, to use when money is tight.
Weekly Savings, we all know what that is. Since I'm closing out the end of the year on this one, I think I'll go in reverse order next year, starting with $52 deposited for the first week, and go from there. (This is a potentially non-sinking fund.)
Taxes, $5,300 for property taxes is just a guess. We recently had a local organization win a fight with the cities about whether it is subject to property taxes. The loss of that tax revenue affects all taxing districts (city, county, schools, park districts, etc.) which have to replace the money they lost, presumably by raising property taxes on the rest of us. I expect this will not be enough to cover my property taxes this year, but I won't know for a few months yet. (Let me rant about taxes for a second. We have a flat 5% income tax in this state which is assessed against most of our income; sales tax in this area is now 8.75% for combined state and local; and our state is in horrendous fiscal shape. I don't object to paying my taxes, but I would like to see some results. When I consider other states for a potential retirement move, I am considering the overall tax picture.)
Retirement, well, it's a lot, but I'm hell-bent on increasing retirement because I plan to retire in 4 years. (Hope I make it!) In 2014, this is likely to be a non-sinking fund.
I know there are a lot of other categories I need to account for, like vacations, emergency fund, and so on. I will save for them, but don't want to track them right now.
Great job, grits and ilovedophins!

Hi Saver Friends!!!

I'm sure I dropped off the list a long time ago as I haven't updated since the beginning of the year. I spent the spring doing my student teaching and working part-time at a paying job. I actually got a teaching job and just quit my p/t job a few weeks ago.

Fortunately I didn't dip into my savings too much over the last year. But I'm still looking forward to getting back on track in 2014.
Rocky Mtn Saver 12/02/13 $10,129 (01/01/13 = $0; Goal = $10,000)
I shifted around some of my savings to meet more immediate needs, so I still have a few missing roses, but the overall goal is met. So, if I can gain any additional roses by the end of the year, that'll be icing on my cake.

For those of you tracking retirement savings here FWIW: Thought about it & I've decided to NOT track auto deposits (prop tax, earthquake ins, Roth) next year as these come out on the 1st whether I do anything or not. And I'm assuming that the holidays will be the same next year as now. I cut back alot★ Reverse weekly savings = $1378 (for 2014/2015 band) ★ Holiday gifts = $172 ★ Trips & misc = $8450 (no idea really, just rounding to 10k) Congrats, Rocky, on getting to 10k!
