I have a subconsultant that sends me the email "Thanks..." occassionally when I answer a question or something. What the hell is with the ...? I know I spending too much time thinking about this & it really doesn't matter, but I can't help feeling there is an implied sarcasm. Like it should read "Yeah, thanks... " Any thoughts. Or does seem like a normal "Thanks"? I know this is stupid, you don't have to point it out. But it bugs me for some reason.

Some people have a habit of ending everything with... I wouldn't let it bother me...

I think it means nothing, like they don't know what else to use there. Exclamation point sounds too excited, period seems odd, comma seems like more of a closing than an actual message.

Sometimes I'm happy to get those. It acknowledges that someone got and read my email, and they actually care about what I'm working on (or what I produced.) There are always those people that I felt like I sent them stuff and it went into the abyss. I didn't know if I should follow up, or let it drop, or stop sending stuff to them, or what. But when I would get a note back - even with "Thx" on it, I would think that the person actually opened the email.
My take - you can read into it what you want. I think your attitude that it pisses you off will likely hurt you more than anyone else, so the best thing you can do is let it go.

You are projecting your own sarcasm, which has been carefully crafted from years of posting on YM.

I missed the whole point of the thread. Sorry about that.
I would still let it go. Wasted energy.

In my experience, many people do not understand how to use punctutation correctly. So I wouldn't worry about it too much. I tell you what bugs me. People who do not understand how to use quotation marks correctly, and instead use them as emphasis. For example, I have a coworker who has a sign on her door that says, "Anyone" who accepts a package must sign for "all" packages. Oy, this drives me up a wall!

Hahaha! That "bugs" me too. I've "noticed" it a lot on here lately. I think it bothers me because then I read it "sarcastically", with mental "finger-quotes".

You are projecting your own sarcasm, which has been carefully crafted from years of posting on YM. This is probably it. If I wrote "Thanks..." on YM, it would undoubtedly be followed by or something similar.

Um, he doesn't know about the Great Dot Shortage? ... I know! Looney will have a fit. It also makes me think of The Office, when they were reading Darrel's texts & he added to many dots to a text, which completely changed the meaning. I am trying to read meaning into these dots, when likely there is none. He just wants to use his share of the dots...

I think it means nothing as well. As an introvert with a lot of users I communicate with (ie extroverts) I have found that the more extroverted people seem to need to say alot of 'nice' stuff. Since you've helped someone they feel obligated? good about? required? to acknowledge your help with a "Thank you". If you want to have fun with this person... when you get a "Thank You" from them reply back with a "no, problem." odds are they will reply back with something... it's like they can't figure out when the conversation is done Of course, if you are an introvert forcing an on going meaningless email conversation probably isn't something you want to do. FWIW: I have users who I purposefully need to make small talk with BEFORE I actually get around to the reason I'm talking to them (even in an email). I can't just send: Hey Bobby Joe, send me the datafile you sent for processing earlier this morning there was a problem and I need to see exactly what you sent to find the problem. They will read this and think I'm angry or mad at them or being rude. I have to send something like: Hi Bobby Joe! Hope you had a nice weekend and are having a good day. I saw that the datafile you sent for processing failed to process. I really need to see the datafile you sent for processing. Would you be so kind as to forward the email you sent (with the file) for processisng to me? I will take a look and see what went wrong. Thanks! - Tiny Speck I get alot of very wordy touchy feely emails from Bobby Joe... and lots of Thanks kinda emails. I quickly delete the 'thanks' ones. Extroverts are soooo weird.

Lose/loose Brake/break Sale/sell (Seriously, if I see one more "For Sell" sign out in someone's yard I'm gonna lose it! )

I only picked to/too/two because Angel D used the wrong one. I was trying to point out that she may very well irritate others as she is irritated by the dot-dot-dot person.

My boss does it. At first I didn't get it but then after having to prompt him several times over a very important email I sent I've come to appreciate it. He is so busy during the day sometimes my stuff gets lost in the mix. A "thanks" email means he got it and actually read it.

I don't and I don't really care. All I am concerned with is making sure he got the email.

That bugs me & I don't even see my own error. Has anyone else felt that as they get older they make far more stupid grammar/spelling mistakes? I find somehow my skills are going way downhill. ETA - OK I found it. I will leave it just for you Thyme I hate loose/lose personally.
