This change has been in the works for a while now, but the dotted line relationship with two employees has been erased and they now report directly to me. I also received another direct report as part of the change. Now I need to do all my engineering duties and manage 3 people. Since I'm doing a dual role, my title will not change to a manager title. My engineering title is high enough to have direct reports in our organization..
Good bye 50 hour weeks, hello 60 hour weeks.

That will keep you busy! Have they told you how much time they expect you to do management type stuff rather than doing your engineering work?

For the 2 existing dotted lines, I was managing them except I didn't do reviews. The extra time for them will be minimal. Adding the 3rd person means another 2-3 hours per week. I'll also be sent to all the formal manager training classes and have to attend manager level meetings that I didn't attend before. To really make this work, I need to delegate 20% of my engineering tasks ASAP.

Being a people manager can suck! 1 of the 2 dotted lines suck. I can only hope that continuously getting bad reviews causes him to leave the company. The other dotted line is an average worker with little ambition to be more than his is. My new report is a recognition of that. She is a superstar with a bright future.

I get the gist of what happened (didn't supervise anyone before, now do), but what's a dotted line relationship, exactly?

well congrats on the recognition! Hopefully - upping the money and title will follow Money is good, they can keep the title. I don't want to be a full time manager.. Our team breaks down into 3 sub-teams. We have architecture, operations, and customer support. So I'm an architecture team member managing the operations folks. What I want eventually is to manage the architecture folks while still doing the technical side.

It means doing 90% of the management work but not having them below you on the org chart. The real manager still keeps the review, compensation, and hiring/firing for the position.
