Both.
I do a lot of purchasing so I make sure that everyone has what they need at their fingertips when they need it.
I also run interference for my boss so she doesn't have to speak with everyone who'd like to speak to her. This allows her more time to pay the bills for all the stuff I purchase.

The fun of middle management. Getting bent over from both side.

Like any healthy relationship, it should be a two way street where both parties are trying to make each other's job/life easier.

Both. I make it easier for my PIs to do what they do best: make money. If they had to be in the lab all the time holding my hand we wouldn't get anything done.
At the same time they make my job eaiser by keeping me updated on where we are on funding for certain projects and any communications they have. If I didn't know that Surgery Research was now putting things off till next year I'd be devoting time to it rather than other projects that need my attention.
I don't uselessly spin my gears and then don't have to micromanage. It's win win.

I find it makes my job a lot easier if I try to help my boss the best I can, particularly with tasks he does not like or is not good at. I have a great boss though, so that makes a big difference.

I'm with Drama.....if I make my boss's life easier, he has more time to chase the money that pays my salary.
He does what he's good at (chasing money) and I do what I'm good at. Win-win.

Both. I should be an asset to both my manager and my staff.

Also in middle management, and I agree that it goes both ways. As a boss, it is my job to make sure my staff has the tools and information to do their jobs to the best of their ability. As a suborndinate, it is my job to make sure my boss has all the tools and knowledge I can provide her with to do her job to the best of her ability. That does not mean that I should be doing my boss's job for her, nor does it mean I should be doing my subordinate's job. It means we should each be doing our jobs to the best of our abilities and when that happens, everyone's life is easier

A good boss works for the good of the company. Not you in particular. What needs done and getting it done. A good employee works for the good of the company presumably by doing what the boss assigned you to do and doing it well and going the extra mile if you see other things that need done. YOU work for the boss. HE/SHE does not work for you. Keep that straight. As for me, if my boss wants me to shine his shoes, bring him coffee and brush the snow off of his car, i will do so. Whatever makes the boss happy and more efficient means more money in my pocket. Always remember who butters your bread.
