So how are folks handling Valentine's Day? How are you keeping the loving spirit frugally?

Single also. No expense unless I cave and buy some valentines candy for myself (after valentines day, when the price is lower, of course).
3? Laterbloomer what have you been up to?

Just dating. Aren't you dating? You're not going to get a little something for them?

I'm married, but DH and I don't get caught up in Valentine's day or Sweetest day. We have 2 little boys, so I will be getting some sweet treats for them.

J - you're single so you don't have to buy valentines day presents? Oh come on, you've got to have a better reason than that.

Amazingly enough, being completely alone for valentine day does exempt you from buying presents LOL OK, either I wrote that poorly or you're being intentionally difficult. (Possibly both). I meant that you had to have a better reason for being single than just to avoid buying valentines day presents. I completely agree that being alone for valentines day exempts you from buying presents (I'm in that same boat.)

Sorry -- didn't realize what you had meant. I'm still not in a good enough place to start dating yet. My ex did a number on me.

We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day (or most holidays, actually) ... and we never ever try to go out for dinner on Valentine's Day ~ that's the definition of overpriced insanity. I am just glad my wonderful DH is coming from from Iraq before then!!!!!

We will try to go out to eat(think cheap like Mcd's) but not on Valentine's. And that's because next month is a anni. and there's no point in going out 2 times in months. So any time between the 14th this month and the 26th month will be a combo lol

J, the best way to get revenge is to move on and get happy. Don't let yourself get stuck in the "my ex did a number on me" trap as an excuse for shutting people out. The only one being shut out is you potentially missiing out on meeting some really interesting people, long or short term.

I'm single as well. I just send a few Valentine's cards. One to my Grandma and the other to my parents. Then I go to my friend's house who usually hosts a 'I hate Valentine's Day' party. It's potluck, food and liquor, and then we complain about the opposite sex and wish we had a boyfriend.

I send cards to the grandkids and maybe fix a sugar-free jello heart for DH(he's diabetic). Our anniversary is the 18th so we save any going out for that.

Well, let's see, the 14th is a Monday. Which means after gymnastics practice is over for my daughter we'll have dinner, she'll take a shower and hit the hay. I'll talk to my SO for half an hour on the phone. He'll present me with no card, no flowers, probably won't even remember it's VD. I'll send one to my mother, my teenage niece, and give one to my daughter. Big whoop.

We'll do the card thing... and we will go out to eat (although we avoid the 14th itself to avoid overpricing and crowds). We don't do candy any more, but he will usually come home with a colorful bunch of posies. Fire in the fireplace, some wine, and ....

I say we all send The J and Later V-day cards! Who's with me? nothing for J, but I will send Later a 'special Valentine Hi' through PM I'll get away with two cards for loved ones and maybe make a nice dinner for the following Saturday. That's it so far.

I'm a teacher and give cards to the kids, but I bought them at half-price last Feb. 15th. Hubby gets a dvd that he's been wanting, and that I found on sale.

I'm single, and I'm not doing anything special for myself because I'm saving pennies for my U.K. trip (2/22-3/15). However....I am giving away a lovely, mango-scented "Bathe & Bloom" gift set from The Body Shop over at my personal website, www.donnafreedman.com. Deadline to enter is 9 p.m. PST Monday, Feb. 7. If you win, it'll be your cheapest V-Day ever.

DH and I have been married for over 30 years. We don't do the hearts and flowers thing just cuz someone tells us that we're "supposed to" on this certain day. We tell each other we love one another and appreciate each other on a regular basis. Having said that, DH is out of his fav cologne (Polo). He told me that the ladies at work comment all the time when he wears it. Since there are always perfume/cologne sales around Valentines Day, this will be the best time to buy it (until maybe Father's Day) for him. I have a wad of Register Rewards from Walgreens and they are going to have Polo on sale for $10 off starting Sunday. DH and I do not exchange gifts just because it is an "occasion". When gift-giving holidays come around (including birthdays, anniversaries, and Xmas), if there is something that I KNOW that DH wants, great; but there is never any pressure or expectation to give each other anything, ever.

I don't know what DBF and I will do this year. I kind of feel like it's a sham holiday made up by the greeting card companies, and there's no reason to make a big deal out of it. Last year we decided to not do anything, which was fine. I did get a funny card for him, and some of his favorite candy (peppermint patties). I guess I thought he would at least get me a card too, and he didn't, and this led to some confusion, resentment, fighting, and hurt feelings (on both sides), so I'm wary this year. I guess what I really want is for him to want to make me feel special. Not to spend money, or send flowers (which, to me at least, feel like a waste of money, and, if they're sent to an office, like a uncomfortable, showy, public display), or really to spend any money. I'd just like him to want to spend the evening with me, without resenting not getting to do whatever he wants, without checking the internet on his cell phone every 4 minutes. So yeah, thinking about Valentine's day is anxiety-inducing.

Holy cow people! It's just a fun little holiday! I picked up my cards and gifts at the dollar store today. I'm sending cards in the mail to my parents and giving out cards and candies to a few friends. My parents are going to be more impressed that I actually made it to a mail box than anything.
