Thyme- Yes. DH's dad was a highly decorated Marine Corps pilot during (and before) Vietnam. He flew jets and helicopters. Was awarded a Flying Cross and Silver Star for one of the rescue missions he flew in Vietnam. Retired and died 6 months later collecting air samples for the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority). Plane malfunction (essentially the wing broke off mid flight). Uncle was flying himself, his wife, his son and DH's sister home from Thanksgiving in Hilton Head SC. They took off correctly but another private pilot that was unfamiliar with that airport took off in the wrong direction and banked right into them. Killed everyone on board both planes. Sadly- most of DH's family was still standing outside watching them take off so they witnessed it happen DH's dad died in 1978 and the others died in 1980 I believe.

I'm flying with my mom and sister next week to my parents vacation home in California. DH will need to take his anxiety pills to get through the day of my flight out and flight back. He was a wreck earlier this year when DS flew by himself to meet up with my folks for a mini vacation at their house.

No DH was not at that Thanksgiving and yes it was his half sister that was on board. It's a long story but when his dad died his mom very quickly remarried (less than 6 months later) and had DH adopted by her new husband. Her only child (in her mind) was my DH. The other 4 kids were her step kids. They had a shitty excuse for a mom that abandoned them and the cops called DH's dad and said "we have your kids here, your ex left them and we found them panhandling on the beach" So DH's dad flew to Florida to get them and brought them back to CA. DH's mom went from just married to the mother of 4 kids and pregnant with DH within like 3 months. She is not a good mother. She kicked her step-kids out of her house and the sister went to live with the aunt and uncle that were in the plane with her. DH holds some blame and resentment towards his mother because if she hadn't kicked his sister out to live with other relatives than he feels she would still be alive. The other kids were older and over 18 but his half sister was only like 12 or so when his mom sent her away.

Along with a combination that others have mentioned. To go to our lake property from our house the fastest way to go involves having to cross a bridge that is over a large lake known for being the most alligator infested. I mean thousands and thousands of them. DH is the type that drives with his wrist or site sees instead of watching the road. I make him put both hands on the steering wheel, etc. because I fear us going off the bridge and the alligators eating us while we try to swim ashore. I guess I'll just stay inside and drown because that seems much better and less painful.

Of course, I don't think I could own a lake house by alligators.

Thank you, Agilemom. But don't be too impressed. That is why our property is on a much smaller lake and we've yet to build out there. But we only get a couple gators and they don't bother us. So far. It's the bear that's been showing up (according to the neighbors who live out there) that worry us now.

While I was working at my first job (as a teenager), I answered the phone and the lady on the other end was HYSTERICAL. It was the mother of a coworker. The mother was watching my coworkers children and her little girl had been run over in the driveway. She was lying down on the cement and a pizza delivery car backed into the driveway to turn around and he ran her over and she ended up dying. It has always haunted me and I FREAK OUT when my kids play near a driveway. That's an awful story. I feel bad for the little girl and her family, but also for the pizza delivery driver. What a horrible thing to have done. How do you come back from something like that? How do you accept it, forgive yourself, and move on? Anyone could make a careless mistake like that.

I think my biggest "mommy" fear is being present when something awful happens to one of my kids, but not being able to do anything about it. You know, like swimming through an alligator infested lake and not being able to prevent the alligators from snacking on my offspring.

So, an airmen I served with knew a guy who had a home invasion while he was recovering from a serious surgery. Somebody broke in and raped his wife while he listened to the whole thing but couldn't get out of bed on his own to do anything about it. That still sticks with me. I'm not sure I could live with something like that.

My worst fear is opening my door to see a military chaplain and officer waiting to tell me that my wonderful DH has been killed. I hate deployments.

Molly-out of curiosity, if the military had some other reason (nothing major or minor) to stop by your home, while your spouse (or anyone's spouse/mate) is deployed, would they/do they call ahead so they don't scare the families?

I believe that we can manifest what we dwell on, so try to not go there.
I believe this too. I am generally quite anxious, but when I think about my worst fears I always try to quell them by visualizing all my four kids saying Kaddish (the Jewish prayer for the dead) over my grave. That means I'm gone but they're all here, so YAY LOL.
My other fear was losing DH at 55, the age my VERY beloved BIL was when he died, leaving my sister a widow at 50. Thank Gd I didn't lose my DH at 55, but that's exactly how old he was last year when he had his accident.
I find that pretty odd.
