So the ugly falling down fence is gone. It has been replaced with a nice 6-foot dog eared redwood fence. The cost of the fence was split between me and neighbors son. He then told workers that he wanted the piece that connected his moms house to the fence replaced and that I should pay half of that too. Despite worker explaining that piece was 100% completely and totally on his moms property I paid for half to avoid the "neighbor issues" he accues me of causing. The rails are 100% on my side because his mom demanded that her side be all flat. Whatever, I agreed because i want a functional fence and not a falling down POS. Now the woman and her son are not happy because it was recommended that the fence be water sealed and they want me to pay for all of that.
Moral of the story - some people will never be happy! Me, I am doing the happy dance over a functional fence!

That is great, t-dog!! Now can I tease about fences again? You were always the winner because you aren't a whiny PITA and you were more than fair and still got what you wanted.

Yes POM - fence tease away! I was much relieved when my boy and his 2 friends were tossing the football yesterday in the yard and there were no flapping boards and rusty nails waiting to get them!

I'm sure it's been said before, but I just gotta say...neighbour's son is an asshat.

Jerks. I ended up paying for 2/3rd of my fence for various reasons - so I guess you at least got a little something out of the deal.

How did you get them to pay even (most of) their share. I thought they weren't going to pay anything?

Bon - I think it was the comments of the gardener (who built the new fence) and the pictures he took to show the son what a pos it really was and how it was falling over. I offered to front the payment and he could pay me more slowly and he got offended and said he didn't need any financial handouts. I think it was just shame that got him to pony up. Although, I see now where he got his a$%hattedness given his moms insistance on the flat side and that I should pay to seal the entire fence (even their side and the part totally on her property).

Good for you T-dog! Glad to know that "shaming" can still work. It sucks that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree but at least you know what you're dealing with. And I know this is awful for me to say but I hope you get new neighbors soon!

Me too Bon, me too. Although before I get new neighbors I fear I am going to have to deal with son when he decides to come to town and sell mommys place. I anticipate that in the next couple of years. I also anticipate that they are going to complain about pool construction in the spring. Sigh.

so... when the house next door gets sold... the new owners may assume that YOU own the fence outright - since the nice side faces them (atleast that's how ownership of the fences in my neck of the wood works). Is that a long term plus for you? You may have trouble explaining the 'shared' fence with future owners. FWIW: I'm glad you got the fence up. It definitely benefits you and your family.

Missed the first thread on this, so this may have already been posted, but, what's the saying? "Good fences make good neighbors".

ATSiaRU - around here fences are not owned by either side, the cost is stautorily split if both houses have all 4 sides of the lot fenced in, which we both do.

Thanks Petunia - I am enjoying looking out the window and seeing a pretty new fence and not having to worry my DS is going to be stabbed by a rusty nail if his basektball/football rolls up against the fence.

They are just the type of people who are going to be pissed off no matter what you do or don't do so why not enjoy it? Make them pay their half of sealing and whatever else comes up but smile inside because they are such asshats. I live in a closed community and all vehicles are required to have current tags. Had a problem last year with a delay then loss and theft of my tags from DMV. Maintenance Manager turned it into a pissing match and threatened to tow me. I had the paperwork from DMV and tags were in the mail again - he refused to believe/understand that I could not just go make them give them to me, that they had to be mailed. Well, called to police department then called company who employs Mr. "Damn well gonna tow you." Explained that police would be called and tow would be stopped because paperwork I had was adequate for the PD and would have to be adequate for him/them. Also reminded the company that they work for us - the homeowners - and that what was was being done was not only wrong by illegal. End result was Asshat had to back down. Now every time I see him I just smile and wave ... and love it when he shakes his head, frowns, and looks away with a sour expression on his face. It just warms the cockles of my heart that it pisses him off so much and never fails to make my day. I sometimes worry about myself.

Just received my tags for my truck - shall I put them on the car or keep them in the car and "forget" until called on it?
