Is there any reputable website where you can file both federal and state income tax forms for free? This would be a very simple tax return. Or if not free, any idea what the cheapest would be.
I use Turbotax for myself, but I'm looking for something I could use to do my mother's returns for her.

If you repost this question over on the Tax Board, you may get more responses. (I'm leaving it here, but did want to mention the other board, as well!)

The IRS keeps advertising that they have their own software as well. I believe they said it was free, just make sure you go to the irs site (www.irs.gov)

It is sometimes a "come on" for the firms to advertise free federal filing. But they charge for state returns. Maybe your state has a web-site for filing free state returns.
And please don't get a rapid anticipation refund loan, the interest rate is atrocious.

Don't worry no rapid refund. I'm going to work on it this weekend, if the state doesn't offer free e-filing she'll just have to do it the old fashioned way and mail it in.
Thanks.

I've used taxslayer.com for years. They are easy to use, and to file both state and federal is only a total of $14.95, not software to buy, and they keep my returns so if I ever need one, I can just go online and print a copy (I print one when I file and keep a hard copy, but looking it up online is much easier than digging through old files). I think if you are filing a 1040EZ it is cheaper, but then, if you're doing an EZ, you really don't need to use a program.

If you go to the IRS website, they have a link that can direct you to free e-file companies for federal. I don't know of any free state filing.

BOTH FREE!

Are they really free for anyone, or does your adjusted gross have to be below a certain level?

If your mom is a senior, AARP offers free filing in your community. i go to the community center and have them do it for free. Both state and federal. They are retired tax people.

Where I live, AARP handles tax returns for both low income people and seniors for free. It's a great service. Check and see if it is in your area. Here they require appointments.
