I finally told my neighbor last week on the coldest morning we had so far that I really wish he wouldn't park so close to me as he is scarring my car with his car door. So... of course when he comes back today he parks even closer to me and I watched him lean his car door against my car again! He's got at least two feet on the other side of his car in his parking spot he can use. Why does he have to be such a jerk and continue to park so he leans that huge car door into my car almost every time?! Its a big american car, Grand Marquis sized in a coupe style so that door is a monster. Does he really not care or does he really believe that because he starts leaning the door against the small rubber strip around my car that his non-straight door which curves out above that strip doesn't take paint off?! Any suggestions as to what I can put on my car to stop him? I wish I had money for magnets all around that side for protection and a car alarm that would go off everytime that door touched my car. I'm practically parking on the white line that defines my assigned parking spot that's fartherest from him but he just keeps parking close. He has no one on the other side of him. He did offer to pay for repairs that day, but who knows if he would follow through. His car wouldn't start that day (karma?) but its back to same old same old. I'm really tempted to park on the white line on his side so he can't get in his car. I think he'd just ruin my car though. Really not happy, I need lots of money to repair my car and daily this jerk hurts it.

Super glue his lock. I came out of Lowe's once and a lady had her shopping cart against my car. I mean AGAINST my car. I asked her if she thought that was okay, and she said, "Oh honey, it is JUST a car." I told her, "Yeah, BUT it is not YOUR car."

Or, does he have a door guard on his car? Maybe you can kindly ask him to put one on his car if he is going to insist on leaning his door against yours?

What did he say? Did he seem amenable? Could you switch parking spots and use his and him use yours? Maybe he has trouble pulling into that spot. I'll ask. I think he one of those people that parks more based on where other cars park than the white lines defining the space.

---then there's the chance that he'd park too close to the line on the right, blocking Optimist from getting in on the driver side of his own car. It's a Catch-22.

Ok, I can be a passive aggressive bitch, but I'd have my passenger side door "accidentally" hit his, and I have a son so I'm sure that some other dings/scratches could result from a bookbag, etc. I'd also park right on the white line while he is parked so that he has to get if from the passenger's side (I own a truck as well and that would conveniently be parked right on the white line on his passenger's side). I bought my car with a few dings and scratches on it so they don't bother me though (if he tried for "payback") When nice doesn't work, sometimes you have to be a bigger jerk, but you have to be able to accept any consequences that come from it.

I tend to get extra obnoxious when someone ticks me off. I'll either be really quiet (fear of getting arrested and all) or just plain hateful.

His car has a rubber strip too but its even lower on the door than mine. The car door bows out above where his rubber strip hits my door. If the door had been designed properly it would be either straight up from the rubber strip on his door or angled in towards his car. Instead it bulges out for a foot or so somewhere above that strip. The bad or good thing depending on how you look at it is the gouge is only visible when my car is clean and it certain light conditions. Then you can see a bunch of stretched out white C's at a certain height for about one to two feet along my door.

I was being facetious. I don't really advocate keying someone else's car. I do however, advocate telling him what an ass he's being if he won't stop after being asked nicely.

Do you only get one spot? You said that no one parks on the other side of him. Can you park there?

I think he parks based on his view as a driver. The spot next to me is permanently inhabited by another neighbor's car which isn't used right now. They could see me trying to park away from the other neighbor so that older not quite as big as neighbor#1's car is in that spot favoring the left, away from my driver's side. Also, he never parks so close to my car that I can't get in as I have a small 4 door, a 3 series, and even if he did park me in, his spot just has curb on the passenger's side. He occasionally drives his female companion places so its even more doubtful he would crowd me on his passenger side. Very rare for him to park near the curb on that side.

Use the reply button (with orange arrow) at bottom of previous message to insert text into the shaded "Quote" box. That feature doesn't work in "Quick Reply".

It doesn't bother me and I'm not the poster you actually asked but just letting you know how it happens.

Can you get a traffic cone to put on the line at the end of your spot so that he has to park over a little? If there's not a space on the other side of him he should still have plenty of room! You could just store it in your trunk.

Maybe he's afraid of hitting the curb. I have less front end than DH does on his car and he clenches up every time he rides with me and I park.

Get an old blanket or pillow and hang it off the side of your car - securing it by sticking it in the window or by using a bungee cord.
Even better if you have a u-haul furniture blanket.

380 slug though the engine block. I aways was one for extremes. go to Lowe's and get a section of plastic privacy fence. stick the two ends in bucket of concrete and place on line.

Get a written estimate for the repair costs. Hand him a copy.

I would follow through on the repair bill too. If his action cost him a grand or more, he might take steps to avoid that in the future.

Get a written estimate for the repair costs. Hand him a copy. But don't get it repaird. He'll probably do it again. So just keep handing him another bill for the original damage. Is he elderly? Does he need help to get out of his car and uses your car to hold his door still while he leans or pulls out of his car?

Since you have assigned parking, I assume there is someone in charge of parking. You could try making a complaint to them.
When I was in college, some a-hole parked so close to me I couldn't open my door, I had to enter through the passenger door. I always carried a 2' piece of iron pipe in that car to use as a cheater bar for the lug wrench. Once I got inside, I rolled down my window and used the pipe to beat the crap out of his door.
