EBay is getting to be played out. I have purchased quite a few things on ebay over the years and sold a couple. I have never had trouble.

I have used Ebay several times, but I cannot say that I have ever gotten a really good "deal". You really have to watch the shipping costs. On the other hand, I've sold a few items for decent prices.

I sell a lot on Ebay. Mostly positive experiences. Not getting rich off of it, but it adds a few hundred dollars every month.

insurancegal, try out the free version of Terapeak
You can do searches any type of item and it will show you how much they sell for, if they sell and what percentage of them sell. That will give you a good idea of whether or not the item(s) you want to sell are worth listing on Ebay.

I much prefer Craigslist to Ebay. I used to do a fair bit of selling on Ebay, but, it got to be a huge hassle. Postage is so high, many people don't want to pay for shipping. Running back and forth to the post office, etc...I'd much rather have someone show up at my house with cash or meet someone in McDonald's parking lot. Also, keep in mind, Ebay has changed many of their policies and procedures over the years and they are very PRO BUYER now. If you ever have an issue, as a seller...FORGET it. You will be totally SOL and will get no backing or assistance from Ebay. I will still sell a few things on there. Matter of fact, I just sold some spring training tickets and have more listed. But, really, I only list stuff a couple times a year now. I have much better success with Craigslist...way less headaches!

Yes, you have to have paypal.
Except in the electronics categories, which tend to have a lot of fraud type problems, most (not all), but most buyers pay.
But even if they don't, you're not out any more than if you had listed the item and it hadn't sold, because you NEVER send the item until after you have your money. And Ebay has a system where you report non paying bidders and you get your final value fees back. My experience is that usually once you report them to Ebay, they pay up.

WARNING: One more thing - my Ebay selling is set up as a business.
If you're going to sell on Ebay starting this year, there is a new law that will require Paypal to report what they "give you" over $600. (That's $600 total, not per transaction).
I don't know what that would mean tax wise to someone who doesn't have it set up as a business, you probably need to check into that.
I have a friend who sells a lot of her and her family's unwanted stuff on Craigslist. She's been very happy with it. I'm too leery of meeting up with strangers to do that - but that's just me.

I've bought and sold on ebay, but lately done more buying than selling. Last fall, I dropped and broke my cell phone. I didn't want to sign another 2 yr contract to get a free one, so I bought a replacement (exact same model) on ebay for $65. When I'm buying I read the seller's feedback carefully, I check the shipping charges and check to see if there's a handling charge. I ALWAYS by with paypal and use a credit card. If the item is a lot of money, I will email the seller with questions just to see if they are responsive. If they don't respond to my question, I won't bid. And I don't get caught up in a bidding war. There will always be another item like it up for sale.
When I'm selling, I try to figure out very carefully how much shipping will cost and be upfront about it in my listing. I try to take very clear pictures (and pay to have more than one shown in the listing). I try to be as accurate as possible and disclose and imperfections. I don't worry about buyers paying me because I don't ship until I've been paid.

I've bought and sold on Ebay for +10 years. It's all luck in the timing. Early on, you could make really good money on "collectibles", but now they're so dime-a-dozen that you really can't. I've only ever had one person not pay... granted though, that might not mean much being as I'm a very casual seller.
DH does the Craigslist thing more often than Ebay because the items he's selling (usually musical equipment) do not always ship very well or inexpensively. He's had much better luck there than on Ebay.

I used to sell a lot on eBay about 10 years ago. For the few people I had who didn't pay, you get to relist the item for free and report the buyer as a non payer.
Paypal is somewhat of a protection for both the buyer and seller. I only got burned once as a seller by someone who said he didn't receive the goods. That is when I learned to sell only in the US and use delivery confirmation.
Recently I've sold on Craig's List, which I like because there are no fees.
For what I was selling, the economy has brought the prices way down, so I'm just glad I sold when I did.
