I don't think anyone knows what most of your crazy ramblings mean. Look everyone! We have YM member who doesn't get 'paying for the wedding'! Also taxdaddy when you say 'I don't think anyone knows'... you have to ask anyone...have you asked anyone if they understand my rambling? So far I think you are the only one. So you better learn my language! And btw people today agreed wih me...TWICE!!! So don't waste your time! Huh? I'm having some difficulty understanding your ramblings. Being a polyglot, I'd love to learn your language. Which language is it?

Adults may have a problem with it, but kids today don't seem to. My 8 or 9 yo nephew was dressing up in his female cousins' princess dresses at a family b-day party and came around to show all of us. Lots of the teen boys I know are comfortable dressing in various "girly" items: pink tutus, tights, makeup, etc. I remember one of the guys telling us all that the role he wanted in South Pacific was the cross-dressing one. He got it, too. The ones that get a kick out of this stuff are not the gay ones. The gay guy got the romantic lead. Then again, the kids I know are all Drama teens. The girls revel in taking on male roles whenever we let them - Sweeney Todd and Dracula were both all-female casts a few years back.

That kid isn't even dressed a princess. I don't see no crown, or dress. He's obviously a fairy, and there are male and female fairies. I bet if you ask the kid he'll say "I'm a bug!!"

There were quite a few guys (when I was college age) who would dress up in women's costumes. Not a big deal at all. Maybe people should start getting upset about more important issues?!?

So I told DH about this today. We decided that the only bad parenting decision was buying 2 costumes for the kid... ;D

Omg... you are attributing a lot of power to a set of fairy wings, (which can be just as much fun as fake blood...)

This kid could grow up to be one of those guys who wears milk bags so they can 'breadth feed' their babies. Sure that is okay, but do you want to be married to him
There are men willing to do that? Damn I married the wrong dude.
I'd have paid money to have a husband willing to breastfeed the kiddo so I wouldn't have to do it!

Good point Archie. Not sure if I am willing to marry Dark. I can always use formula instead.

Treat children for who they are. Let them have fun, but treat them for who they are. Who he is is a boy that wants to wear a princess costume. Male and female roles are learned, not inherent. They can be whatever we want them to be. I'd let him wear it. More importantly, I wouldn't make a big deal of it if someone else let's their boy dress in traditionally female costumes or outfits.

Dressing up a little boy as a girl is weird. I wouldn't classify letting a child dress as they wish for Halloween as weird parenting.

Dressing up a little boy as a girl is weird. Forcing your kid to wear purple wings would be weird parenting. Letting your kid pick what he wants to wear, even if he picks purple wings, is good parenting. First of all, good parents learn not to set rules and argue over unimportant things. Wearing purple wings for Halloween is unimportant. Second, good parents try not instill ideas about what is and isn't allowable just because you have a penis. Soon enough he'll figure out what society thinks is 'ok' for a boy. For now, let him have fun with the purple wings.

It sounds like the boy, now older, was destined to identify himself as a female. No parental teaching of gender identification would change that. Any interference by the parents would only drive the boy underground to continue his practice. Going underground would possibly put him in physical danger.
His family knows the danger. They have probably worked out a compromise with the boy-you may dress as you wish at home but for safety's sake, dress appropriately outside of the home.

Using the word "panties" doesn't make someone transgendered. It's offensive to even suggest it. You can't make someone become a cross dresser/transexual by using what you consider to be an inappropriate feminine word for underwear.

"I encouraged my girls to wear dresses at least once a week when they were young. I didnt make them. I just wouldnt buy them new school clothes unless they agreed to wear one dress a week"
I find this a little weird...

No...thinking that wearing dresses once a week makes a girl grow up into a capable young adult is what's strange.

Not a thing. But you should take credit for molding them into fine, upstanding citizens instead of giving the credit to their wardrobes.

No...thinking that wearing dresses once a week makes a girl grow up into a capable young adult is what's strange. Totally not getting on my soapbox today, but my in-laws required that their daughters wear dresses to church. It didn't stop dh from being transgendered and transitioning to a man once he grew up. We are probably overly aware of gender in our house, and I have constantly been amazed at how boyish my son is, since I don't think we've encouraged either gender role and instead just let him be himself. Apparently kids are born with their own innate personalities that determine 90% (I'm guessing here, don't ask me for links) of who they are. When a child is older I don't think there is anything wrong with discussing societal norms and potential outcomes of straying outside, but trying to force your child to fit into those societal norms is a pretty good way to alienate your kid. Milee had the best analogy I've seen of how much nurture could affect nature in a child. So of course I didn't save it.

Those little purple wings are fairly innocuous...and what kid doesn't want to fly. If the mom had decided to dress little Johnny in something like this, it would make me slightly uncomfortable...Halloween or not.

What is wrong with wanting girls to learn feminine skills? -------------- What are these feminine skills you speak of? It doesn't take a lot of skill to wear a dress.

He's not dressing up as a girl. He's wearing a set of wings. He's a little kid. For all we know those are his dragon wings, because they're the closest thing he could find. Or he thinks he's a dragonfly, or some other kind of bug. He's not wearing a tutu and halter top. It's a set of wings. The person who took the picture assumed he was trying to be a princess. We have no idea what the little boy thinks he's dressing up as.

Doesn't change the fact that some parenting choices are weird and not that beneficial to the child. Dressing up a boy as a girls seems weird to me. You're implying that the parents MADE the child wear purple wings. That would be weird regardless of gender--which is how I feel about making girls wear dresses, or not allowing boys to wear certain colors. Allowing your child to indulge in make believe that they choose for themselves seems 100% normal to me. Most kids aren't going to grow up to be transgendered, or werewolves, or fireman regardless of their halloween costume type. I think as parents we give ourselves way too much credit for how our kids turn out.
