no one else has other ideas? (and I made sure to clean the screen real well since the last time I looked at porn, so I don't think that's the problem

It is a manual button you have to flip that is getting stuck, or a touch screen button that is not moving over?

its a "switch" on the touch screen, not a "real" switch
it's for when you do the airplane mode thing (if you have an iphone?)

So what do you mean it gets stuck? It won't move over, or it will move , but won't stay on the right setting?

it slides to the "on" position easily when I turn on the airplane mode
however to slide it to turn it off, takes about 20 tries or so until it will slide the other way
if that makes sene?

Have you updated to ios6? 2 or 3 os updates ago, I had a problem where it seemed like every time I had to press an icon 3 or 4 times for it to work. After I installed the most recent ios update the problem went away.
ETA: It's found under Settings>>General>>Software Update

I wouldn't think it had anything to do with the touchscreen because that same area of the touchscreen is used by you for a lot of other applications (do icons in the first or second row not open on the first tap?).
Make sure you are sliding your finger or stylus straight across the screen - if you go up or down slightly when sliding, the iPhone will want to move the whole page up or down instead of switching it to/from airplane mode.
I just updated to ios6 and just tested the airplane mode - the first time, I didn't go straight across so the whole page moved on me. The second time, it switched right from on to off and off to on.
