I think it was good for me to be a latchkey kid. I remember starting college and being amazed at how many kids couldn't do their own laundry or cook. I have no problem if you want to be home with your kids. What annoys me is people who negatively judge the parents that give their kids a little bit more leash.

Well, LOL! Depends what day of the month it is for how i am "negatively judged". One minute i am a helicopter parent, and the next i am a neglectful free range parent. Or, i am a sexist mother because my son takes out the trash or on and on and on. However, the amusing thing is, that nobody can really quite figure me out either way! ;D

The term came because people used to put the house key on a string that the child wore around his neck like a necklace so that they didn't lose it. When my Dd started letting herself in after school she managed to lose a key a week it felt like.
