No, my aunt is from Oregon and just wants out of the wet and cold winter and I wanted to go to Florida again, had my aunt on board but DF wants to go someplace different. I'm sure we will freeze to death at that time of year.

I'm looking at flagstaff, sedona area. But we will probably drive all over the state and see stuff. No humidity is Florida in the winter. Wait until my aunt finds out we're going to AZ instead of FL!

zibazinski-if you or your fiancé are interested in rock, mineral or gem collecting, the 2013 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show (February 14-17, 2013) is the place to go. I believe it's the largest rock/mineral/gem collectors' show in the country with multiple venues. www.tgms.org/tgms.htm

Zib, I don't know your race but if you are Hispanic or if DF is bring your US passport. With the issues there, people have been detained if they have another states licence.

You may very well have snow at the Grand Canyon and Sedona in February so be prepared. The North Rim is closed until May 15th (it's at 8000 feet), the South Rim is at 7,000 and Sedona is between 5,000-6,000. Snow is a possibilty through April. The first time I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in late April, we had a perfect hiking day. The next day there was snow on the ground and a massive pile up on Highway 17 (the highway from Flagstaff (Flag) to Phoenix). You might subscribe to Arizona Highways Magazine to get some great ideas. www.arizonahighways.com/Also check out Trip Advisor for places to stay. We're staying here in November:http://www.hotels.com/ho251496/villas-of-cave-creek-cave-creek-united-states/ We lived in the area for 6 years and still own a house in the adjacent community. It's a little far North for most people. To be closer to the Airport you can check out the A lofts in Tempe (near ASU) or the A loft Airport. Scottsdale also has a wide variety of housing choices from resorts to apartments. Lots of stuff to see! ETA: We've also had friends stay here: www.jwdesertridgeresort.com/

I went to the show in 2009. It would take a WEEK to see everything! Fortunately I was with a friend who has a resaler's license. Not only do you get to deal with the wholesalers you get to see a lot more interesting things.
If one is interested in going you must make hotel reservations ASAP because hotel/motel space in Tucson is extremely limited and sells out early. Traffic can be a nightmare too.

For my friend and me, it was about jewelry making. She's really into beading. I tagged along thinking I would take it up again because i would have time on my hands during Bonn's winters. But it's much more than Jewelry making. There were amazing giant gems for sale as well as some gorgeous counter materials (embedded fossils from Madagascar for example) and other furniture. There was plenty of crap for sure but it's also fun to see how the other half lives.

BTW Zib, as you have probably already figured out, there are several Zonies (what we CA call them when they come to our beaches and take all the good parking spots ); Thyme, Phil, sewfs (?). And Milee is a recent ex Zonie.

Well, never mind. My aunt really wants to see Hawaii so we are going to Kaui or however it's spelled for a week instead.

You'll love Kauaii. I think that's a great choice for February. Do the Grand Canyon/Sedona in learly May. If you want to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon you should do it by Memorial Day. Although the temps at the top will be nice, the bottom (which is at 2500 feet) will start reaching the 100s. It's only a 7 to 8 mile hike from the river to the South Rim (depending on what trail you take). But hiking a mile elevation climb is still work even if you train for it!

That's where we want to go. When we do go to AZ. I hope my aunt was kidding when she complained about only a week in paradise.. All she's paying is her airfare and she will probably fly first class! If DF goes with us, and I'm thinking he will, we're going to take either some day trips or tack a few extra days onto the trip, sans Aunt, I'm thinking! But we will be in steerage for 10 hours not first class for 5! Plus, I'll have to get a two bedroom unit then and that costs more. If he goes. No way is he sharing a bathroom with anyone but me. Heck, I don't want to share a bathroom with him even!
