Though we've veered off topic, I wonder how the lifespan fairs when you take out, as one study put it, "fatal injuries" (i.e. fatal car accidents and murders). There was a study that when you take out fatal injuries the US jumps from 19th in expected life span to 1st. (Which makes sense since our murder rates are quite high, and I'm thinking car fatalities are probably pretty high too due to lack of mass transit.) You always hear of the correlation of the poor being around more violent crime, more likely to be killed, so it'd be interesting to see how the lifespan of the poor fairs once you take that out. www.forbes.com/sites/aroy/2011/11/23/the-myth-of-americans-poor-life-expectancy/ The study is about a third of the way down...the third bolded item.

The only way the Foster parent could be the child's legal guardian would be for them to adopt the child. Not necessarily true. My mom is the legal guardian of a 16 year old boy. She has been since he was around 4 months old. She has never adopted him because his mother has never lost her rights. It is a complicated situation, but my mom IS his legal guardian and not just a custodian. No the mom did not give my mom guardianship, the courts gave my mom guardianship with his biological mother granted visitations and then supervised visitations.

My only example is Florida and foster parents can sign for their foster kids.

I wonder if that has anything to do with how many psych drugs are prescribed for foster kids in Florida? ... I wonder if Texas also has the same policy....

I wonder if that has anything to do with how many psych drugs are prescribed for foster kids in Florida? ... No, the amount of psych drugs prescribed has more to do with the fact that every crazy person in the country seems inexplicably drawn to Florida. Seriously. Have you ever read Carl Hiassen's novels? He discusses the fact that crazy people are drawn to Florida and examples of that abound in his books. They're really well written and funny.

I specifically meant the high number of psych drugs given to foster children in Florida. Texas also has high rates. I mean, they are highly correlated everywhere, but those two states have extreme numbers of foster kids being given high numbers of psych drugs. (or at least did, both states have completed investigations, not sure if that has helped to bring down the numbers... haven't seen recent stats...)

When I was a GAL in Florida, I went to court to get my client a REAL exam from a REAL doctor, not some quack, and that doctor took her off all her spacey meds.
