When we found our iguana we put a message up on CL, asked around, and also looked in all the local papers for a "missing" ad.
Iguanas are one of the most "dumped" pets, due to their size and the damage they can inflict on people, and ours was in very bad shape when we found her. We have assumed that no one wanted her because of her state and the lack of apparent looking for her.
I waited around and no one responded to our ad. So, I built the requisite 7-8' habitat in my house to house her. It was no small task and took about a week. I also had to buy all of the lights and all that stuff necessary for her to live healthy.
Today I got a message from my CL ad that I have someone's iguana and they want her back.

I'd probably ask for proof it is theirs. We found one of our dogs and put ads out saying we found her. We got a call from someone and when I asked they said they were her owners, they said no. They had seen our ad and wanted the dog if we were not keeping her. I said no, we were still looking for the owners and if we did not find them we planned on keeping her ourselves. Who calls for a found dog ad when they aren't the owners? No where did we say we were looking for a NEW home for the dog.

She spent time and money building it a home. I'd say she wants to keep it.
Did you post a picture of it on CL? If not, I would ask the person to describe it before I'd give it back. And take the ad down now so you don't get any other callers.

You could be extra mean and tell them it died from it's lack of care.

At the least they should have vet records for it's care. If they don't have any proof I wouldn't give it to them. They could just be trying to get one for free for all I know. I would also take the ad down if you no longer want the owner coming back to claim it. Truthfully our dog that died this past summer got away and was gone for over 3 months. the person who found him was really far away. they kept putting up fliers in different places. One day DH and DD were at the WaWa and saw his pictures. They called after the shock wore off and said it was our dog did she still have him. she asked a few questions and I told her what coller he was wearing etc. I also brought a picture of him with my kids when I went to get him. She didn't want to see it after I got out of the car and he made a running leap into my arms. ;D

I feel horrible just knowing that she could be someone's lost pet. It is clear to us that she has spent a lot of time with people and being handled. She is at least a few years old and has never made an attempt at aggressive behavior with us or my cats.
Yes, I hate to admit it, but I do want to keep her. We built her this giant house and have nursed her back to health.... She is technically my DS's pet, and he has really bonded with her and likes learning about and taking care of her.
However, the message says that the iggy belongs to his father and that the old man has been out here looking for her for over a month and was heartbroken thinking an animal got to her. (Got the sex right on their message to me...)

If they can convince you it is theirs, you should give it back. And then get one for your son when you're able.

Any unusual, permanent markings on the iguana which only the true owner would know about? Scars?

"I'd give it back. Just good karma." You also might let them know how much you enjoyed the Iguana and would love to have him if the old man is unable to keep caring for him sometime in the furture. You never know how these things can turn out.

If he's really the owner then I would give the iguana back. I would have turned Sabah over if the people who called were really her owners.
I'd explain that you would like some proof that the iguana belongs to him because you want to make sure that the iguana really does make it back to her owners.
When I grillled the people that called they couldn't tell me anything about Sabah and admitted they were not owners they just wanted to know if I would give the dog to them. Uh no . .what if the real owners call?

You never know how these things can turn out. This is good advice. As crazy as this sounds, I had a friend who lost an iguana sometime last year, and hadn't noticed a CL posting until 2 or 3 months after the fact. It was a family who found it, and they asked to keep it, and my friend decided that it would be best if he let them have it.

(Got the sex right on their message to me...) GPG, I'd ask for some proof and also for the story of how the iguana went missing. From there hopefully you can determine whether they are legit or not. I'd want the father to show up to pick it up though. I wouldn't release Iggy to someone else. Once he shows up you can see how well he handles her too. Perhaps he'll be so impressed with what you did(if he's legit) he'll let you keep her. In any event, if you determine the father was her legit owner leave it up to him. If they are just fishing for a free pet don't give Iggy to them.

Do iguanas 'bond' with their owners? For example many lost dogs reunited with their former owners after a several year disappearance immediately, joyfully respond in seeing their former owners again.
I know iguanas won't act like a happy dog but it might recognize it's owner pretty quickly and go to him if allowed.

If the person who claims to own the iguana can properly identify the animal, I'd give it back to him. I would, however, want to know how it got away and what plans are in place to keep this from happening again. You had to nurse a sick animal back to health. If the owner doesn't have a good plan to keep the iguana safe, he doesn't deserve to have the iguana and I wouldn't hesitate to say so.

I was going to say make them prove it and then if they do, make them give you the contact info for their vet to ensure they have a care provider, but i see this is solved. Glad for that ... i mean, i hope they find their iggy... but glad it wasn't yours. I'd take down any signs, etc. at this point. You did your duty. This is your pet now.

Not sure how they would act though because its somewhat dependent on the personality of the lizard. My bearded dragon I wouldn't expect to run to me or anything. However, when I handle him it should be obvious he is used to me and trusts me. He's 19 years old and likes to close his eyes now after I pick him up unlike when he was younger and wanted to run amok more. GPG, Glad your Iggy is still your Iggy.
