Last night was open house at my kids' school.
My 4 yo DD, who is a rather loud, obstinate, and bossy chatterbox just started Jr. Kindergarten.
The teacher was gushing about how quiet, cooperative, and shy she was.
She also talked about her eagerness to learn, so that actually does fit.
Do you think she mixed up my kid?

But, remember teachers are also taught to lie and tell you how 'special' your average little monster is. And, oh how wonderful and blah, blah. Uh huh. The BS o'meter goes tilt, tilt, tilt! That's some good lay lawyering i tell ya!

Haha! We've had that problem for years.. I straight up call these people liars. The kid I drop off at school is not the kid they teach

Remember the Bill Cosby thing about his parents not being the people he grew up with when they became grandparents? Kids act differently around other people.

Remember the Bill Cosby thing about his parents not being the people he grew up with when they became grandparents? Kids act differently around other people. This is true. I've known some parents who had the opposite problem - kids behave fine at home, but they get to school around a bunch of other kids, get all wound up and become maniacs. Then there was my son. Fine at home then got to school and was so shy he didn't talk to his 3rd grade teacher for 3 months.

I had Open House last night too. DS's 1st grade teacher uses "wows" and "zaps" to get the kids to cooperate: if they have a good day they earn a "wow" which can be traded in for stickers or temporary tattoos. They can save them up for bigger prizes too: if they trade in 5 wow's they can pick a toy out of the bin, or be line leader for the day. They get "zapped" if they don't listen to her or if they disrupt the class. She said that she first gives them a verbal warning and then a warning card before she "zaps" someone; and in 25 years of teaching she has only had 2 kids get "zapped" (which involves missing out on recess and a phone call to the parents).
So, when I got home I told DS he was going to get a "Zap" if he didn't brush his teeth and get his pj's on. ;D

;D. Good one! I still remember the kind teacher that gave DS a shell that kept the monsters under the bed from getting him. He, in turn, gave it to DD when she had monsters under her bed.

If it is a new school/new teacher, she might actually be acting like the teacher said. It will probably be a short term change. I remember when DD started her current daycare they would go on & on about how sweet & quiet she is. I was surprised because at home she talks a lot & can be...um....feisty because she has to stand up for herself against her older brother. They were shocked one day after being there a few weeks when she pushed a kid & ran off with a toy. Yeah, that is the kid I know at home . I'm not even sure if they punished her because apparently they thought it was absolutely hysterical because it wasn't her personality as they knew it.

Last March my daughter's teacher called me to tell me how my daughter and two other girls had spent several lunch hours reorganizing and cleaning the teacher's bookshelves. The teacher wanted to call me to tell me how wonderful it was and how much she appreciated it, etc. etc. Instead of being a receptive gracious parent I said "God damn it - I can't get her to clean her room to prevent the end of the world, but she spent all her free time cleaning yours??!!" Poor teacher.

Ask her to do that for 5 minutes at home and you'd think you asked her to walk to the North Pole.

With a little searching, you can SEE him:
I forgot "looking out the window".
I need to find the part where he gets his beard stuck...
Looks like Russian is the best I can do:

They can save them up for bigger prizes too: if they trade in 5 wow's they can pick a toy out of the bin, or be line leader for the day. D Oh the thrill of being line leader! My kids said being line leader was the best because you were the first one to get your lunch! Unfortunately the joy of being line leader goes away after elementary school.

If the economy goes the way some fear, and we have rationing again, then being the line leader might come back into fashion.

I don't think the teacher was blowing smoke. If you have a problem child in the classroom, you want to lay the ground work with parents as soon as possible. Of course, you have to say some positives. I also don't think she confused your kid.
The students I got at the beginning of the year were never the same as the students I got at the end. Also, the way a parent experiences their kid at home and the way a teacher experiences a kid in a classroom often don't match up.
Being cooperative is a highly regarded social skill among young girls. Your daughter probably wants to make friends and is exhibiting pro-social skills to do so. You still get a lot of credit. Most young kids want to make friends, but some of them weren't taught positive social skills and get isolated because of their parents dipshittery.

Wait, is Jr. Kindergarden the new preschool? Or did they add another grade when I wasn't looking.
