Most of the topics we discuss don't have "right" and "wrong" in the strict sense. It's not like I'm arguing 2 + 2 = 4 and you're saying 2 + 2 = 3.
So I don't think people lose an argument really on most things we talk here. 99% of the time, I usually stop posting eventually because I made my point and said everything I have to say on the subject. Trying to change people's minds, especially on deeply personal issues like politics and religion is virtually impossible.
I don't consider getting "walloped" as losing an argument. That's just some people getting mean and winning by bullying. If there is a "winner" in an argument, it's when that person can produce irrefutable evidence that something is right and the other is wrong.

I got proven wrong on the math thread yesterday and freely admitted it. But, I agree with Phoenix that most of our threads are about opinions and for the most people you can't be proven wrong on an opinion.

That's just some people getting mean and winning by bullying. If there is a "winner" in an argument, it's when that person can produce irrefutable evidence that something is right and the other is wrong. "so and so is a jerk because of such and such". Prove such and such didn't happen and you prove th e statement wrong. By "getting walloped" I meant he got overran with facts and logic. I do pretty much what Phoenix does, where I present my opinion and clarify it a time or two and then bow out. I like to think if I am wrong I will own up to it, but most of the discussions have two sides that both have valid points. If there is data available, I try to post it, but most of the time people ignore the data that I post and continue to argue their opinions. A case in point was a thread I started last year presenting national welfare statistics, which was over-ridden by everyone's impression of their cousin's friend's boyfriend's neighbor. Bottom line is I know I am not going to change anyone's long held beliefs, and they are unlikely to change mine. So I post a bit for entertainment and then try to leave before I get all worked up over anything.

or do you just stop posting in that thread? Or do you keep arguing a subject you lost? I saw a guy here get walloped. He answered back he wasn't wrong and got walloped again. I try to say I was wrong if I get proven wrong, but I probably dont as much as I should. I do like to argue. I haven't found you right once, yet you keep posting.

How do you know if someone blocks you??
Anywhoo, I would freely admit if I was/am wrong, but a lot of times people argue emotionally and not logically and I don't know how to argue with emotions, so I just stop posting. If they think the won the argument - so be it. I also just get bored and if the conversation has been going in circles, I stop. Again, if they think they won - so be it. Fortunately or unfortunately, I am just not that vested in 100 page threads.... I don't have the time or desire to keep "arguing". I am not in a business of changing people's minds.

some times they'll tell you "i'm putting you on ignore, b/c you are obviously too smart for my little pea sized brain. I will continue to live a sorry and misguided life, with my bastard child inside of me."
but i don't think they really ignore you, they just do it for their own dramatic effect.

I was on a thread once on another site where I was the only person advocating fiscal responsibility. If the same post had been made here all the frugal YM people would have jumped all over the OP (she was racking up boat loads of SL debt) but the site wasn't a money site and pretty much all the other posters thought I was an idiot for suggesting she try to rein in her debts.
I didn't feel 'walloped' even though everyone else thought I was wrong. I felt like the lone voice of fiscal restraint.
That's why I like hanging out here. No one calls me a cheap kill joy.
They call me other things, but not that.

I put my ideas/thoughts out there and then let it go. I am working on that whole "let it go" thing in my life anyway.
I have a HS friend who is very pro Obama. He pontificates each day on Facebook and seems to think that because he is a college professor that it is his job to educate those of us too stupid to come to our own political opinions. While I agree with many of his posts, I object to the attitude that if you disagree then you just must be misinformed...
I understand that things like legal weed can be offensive to some people. I put out there my thoughts and I chose to ignore the opposition. I have heard it all before and just plain disagree. I also got snarky comments recently about my "living my beliefs" and how that is somehow supposed to be a luxury. I don't think it is.

Between the political post, bible quotes, pictures of grilled cheese sandwiches and other crap I have pretty much abandoned FB. If someone sends me a personal message I will get it via email so I rarely even go to FB anymore.

I don't because it's not really worth it. If I find myself wanting to bang my head against my desk I check out rather than keep arguing. Sometimes I get into it because what is being posted is just plain wrong, but I know that I am never going to "win" because what I am saying isn't what that person wants to hear. If they want to think that they are "right" because I bowed out that is there decision. In reality I bowed out because I am bored and didn't want a concussion.

Depends on who i'm arguing with ... If i'm wrong on a fact, and someone proves it, i'll admit. Sometimes I actually stop arguing because it makes no sense to argue further, so i don't think you can take someone backing off an argument as capitulation. Sometimes its just self preservation.

As someone else has stated, most debates here don't have a "right" or "wrong" except in the eyes of the individual poster. However, I have apologized on several occasions for misstating something or saying something in the heat of the moment that was mean and/or unfair. There is no weakness in an apology. The weakness lies in those who are unable or unwilling to do so. And if I make a mistake HERE in the forum, I apologize HERE in the forum. I don't make a public scene and then apologize in a private PM. That is either complete cowardice or utter arrogance - I'm not sure which.

I've apologized to posters when I've crossed the line and offended them...not the crazy posters that I have fun with but the posters that I consider good people
