Seems like my wife did take a picture of the kitchen when we moved in

Ok, that's just odd.
I have a POS kitchen so I've got kitchen envy.

Ok, I keep looking at the pictures and I want to make sure my eyes aren't wrong. Is there a space between the wall and the cabinets behind the man and then an open space of wall before the cabinets over the microwave start? If so, it would be a big problem for me. I'd be as polite as possible which would be hard for me at this point but I'd definately let the landlord know its not acceptable to you and possibly may cause issues in renting to future tenants. These may not be luxury apartments but they aren't low end either. If I'm looking at low end, I don't expect as much but if I'm looking at middle to high end, I expect things to have a certain look and a finished kitchen is one of those things. I live in a single wide trailer and my cheapo kitchen cabinets look ten times better than that layout.
If there is no gap, then I'd let it go and put up some shelves are some other kind of decoration but keep this in mind when renewal time comes around.

I can't decide whether to or . NOW I see how bad it looked. But, again, most housing laws only require that the unit be habitable. Attractive and common-sense design aren't usually legal obligations on the part of the landlord. But, just from a marketing standpoint -- they really thought you'd (or ANY new tenant) would be okay with that kitchen? Oy. Just oy.

ok for some annoying reason I can't see the "repaired" kitchen photo, but I agree, the move in photo is awful and I would have complained too.

Looking at both pictures- I would guess that the original bank of shelves was not placed correctly. Had they installed them all at once, there would have been room for a corner cabinet had that bank been shifted down.

...:::"Seems like my wife did take a picture of the kitchen when we moved in...":::...
Good god... screw the cabinets... you could fit a SECOND STORY above the damn fridge...
I'd feel a bit fleeced too, and the "what missing cabinets" attitude would have gotten to me. Nevertheless, they DID get someone in pretty quickly to install the cabinets. From the "before" picture, it seems like the measuring mistake was already made. Maybe thats why the other cabinets weren't already up.
Nevertheless, I think getting the end unit was smarter overall. I think you should just let this one go, and get creative with the space. As has been said, some wood stained the same color could make a shelf that is ideal to hold cooking implements (it being close to the stove, and all) or perhaps some pans. I know it feels like you got swindled, but all in all you seem to have a great apartment, at a price that gives you a hope and a prayer of actually staying solvent. Your wife loved it too, and that is the reason you moved in the first place.

Ok so the move-in photo looks terrible, and I retract my statement that I wouldn't care. I was envisioning cabinets up to and over the microwave, then just none over the fridge or between fridge/microwave, which I think I would have been ok with.
I wouldn't care about the cabinet space in the "repaired" kitchen, but I'll also say that empty corner makes the kitchen look like shit. And bullshit a cabinet won't fit there, you get a blind corner cabinet and it will fit. Maybe not ones they have, but they clearly use them. If there's a problem it's that there's no room for it because they botched the microwave/cabinet location. More likely it's just a lot of work to put the cabinet into the corner so they decided not to bother.

The before and after photo also appear to show that a bottle of sparkling wine has yet to be consumed. I guess your management company isn't the only slow one...

Yes another "What would you do" question.

First of all, let me say that I like the simplicity of those shaker style cabinet doors. Personally, I prefer a deeper color on the bottom and a slightly lighter color for the top cabinets, with a few with frosted windows.
The speckled marble is so overdone, personally I ( soon to be we...again) went with a quartz counter top, completely heat resistant and non porous. But you are renting...so, did you do your due diligence?
And why are you asking for advice on a message board (I'm sure some of these folks can be helpful, still...)
Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware), in your case it would be Permissum is quisnam pensio exsisto sapiens (let he who rents be wise).
Stand your ground until everything you thought you signed the lease for is in place.

OK, with the new pic one little important tidbit became clear - the microwave is also the vent hood for the range. This is important because it means that the microwave has to be placed right over the range. (So all the people suggesting that the top cabinets could be shifted - nope, won't work unless you also shift all the bottom cabinetry, range and fridge.) Given where the range is, unless they'll redo all the base cabinets and counters adjoining the range in order to shift the range over or you're willing to have a big gap in between the range and the counters/cabinets next to it - the microwave needs to stay where it is. No way to shift it or you won't have an appropriately placed vent hood.
So you're kind of stuck with the current microwave placement and the fact that it doesn't allow for that corner cabinet without some major shifting, which is unlikely to happen. Open shelves would be a reasonable compromise, though.

So you're kind of stuck with the current microwave placement and the fact that it doesn't allow for that corner cabinet without some major shifting, which is unlikely to happen. Open shelves would be a reasonable compromise, though. My guess is the base cabinets are the same as the ones shown. Not sure the top cabinets need to be "shifted" so much as removed and rehung so that you're not trying to hang the corner cabinet last, when it's supposed to be hung first. There's also the chance it may need to be shifted, but not by much (i.e. the corner cabinet is 30 inches and there's currently 29 3/4" of space). I think the point about the microwave being the hood though is probably the most compelling guess for the most likely issue being that the corner cabinet does fit there, they just don't want the hassle of installing it. Unless they fucked up the base cabinets too. Or if they didn't install the other row of upper cabinets correctly.
