At the risk risk of sounding like MU, I really would like to know why sprinters don't just have very muscled legs but they have arms like weight lifters too? Why is that? I realize that they pump their arms like crazy when running but really?
And it is (mostly) the sprinters, marathoners look much more like I would expect runners to look.
Why, oh why?

You need to carry less weight for the longer distances; the leaner and meaner you are, so to speak, the easier it is to run the longer distances (for Olympic purposes, longer distances would be anything over 1,500 meters). The more muscular builds are necessary for the shorter distances because you need the extreme speed that strength provides. And that strength comes from bigger, heavier muscle. Seems like it should be reversed, doesn't it? www.livestrong.com/article/550102-the-physical-difference-between-long-distance-runners-sprinters/

I asked the same question last night, joss! DH said their arm muscles develop while running, but I also said that biceps like those don't come from moving your arms back and forth.

I knew sprinters who would work on their running using 20lb weights on hands and legs, when they raced with out the weight it was faster carrying less poundage, causing an increase in speed. If you run 100 meters at 10 sec carrying 40 extra lbs, you shave time when the weight drops. The extra weight would create stronger (larger) muscles.

I have to say, as far as the female sprinters go, there's not a one of them I'd want to meet up with in a dark alley. I know every last one of them could run me down, kick my butt and run to the next state before I'd be able to get up!
