while interesting, it wasn't what the commercial was promising. I don't think I fall into the traps they were showing (at least not very often ). And thankfully for me, we don't have any of those high end stores around us other than Wegmans. We do have a super Walmart getting ready to open, but my big complaint with them is it's so darn frustrating to find things. Things you expect to be in the grocery area are somewhere all the way across the huge store. I don't have time for all that. I guess my money is safe for another day

I wasn't suprised with anything they said!

Has anyone else walked away from this show so very very disappointed? There wasn't one fact that we don't know already. They did mention the cards being scanned, but forgot to say what they do with that information. I read an article that briefly mentioned grocery stores sell the info on our cards to health and life insurance companies. These companies are creating a database with the information. The future is we will be charged a premium according to our food choices. I can't prove it, but it is worth thinking about.
They say we don't know how to shop or we don't notice changes such as bigger baskets. When I was too short to reach the bottom of a cart, I noticed the change and knew what was being done.
Typical cnbc, lots of talk, nothing said.

And am I the only one skeptical that their profit margin is only about 2%? Someone is getting the increases in our grocery spending, so I wonder where it goes?
I have heard the same thing about the stores selling your buying habits to other venues, so I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they are selling it to the health industry.

I doubt that the total is 2%. Maybe on one or two items. They get income in other ways such as .10 for each coupon they accept. Manufacturer's bonuses that pay for 2x coupons and shelf space. How can a price go up .40 on an item over night due to costs to the store. Not possible. How can jello cost .28 in a VA walmart and the same item .42 in a NY walmart? I don't like lies. But when I am lied to and someone thinks I'm too clueless to know it, well that combination is lethal. My back is really up.

I totally agree. Kind of like the athlete whose salary is nothing compared to what they get for endorsements.

Very disappointing show. I did not really learn anything more than I already knew. 2% really, do you expect us to believe this?

One guy said that people don't know how to shop. Generally that may be true, but he needs to check out the Grocery Challenge!! ;D
It is RARE that I ever spend $15 in one trip to the grocery store although with the help of coupons I almost always walk out with more than $15 worth of groceries. All I do is cherry pick the very best deals. I see the fancy deli stuff, the fresh bakery goods, and the fancy packaging of name brand products. I don't care how pretty something is packaged or where it is on the shelf, it does NOT make me buy.

So what sort of tricks and traps did the show talk about? (I missed the show) Nothing that we didn't already know... - they put the milk in the back of the store so people will pass other iles
- the shopping cards are used to track what each person buys and when
- reward points to keep people coming back
etc... I was actually board.

The average family of four spends $100 on groceries? Are you kidding me? Is this food and beverages ONLY? I'll go along with shopping 3x a week. I'm in and out all the time. That's what happens when you're within walking distance. "Oh, rats, I forgot to pick up an onion." As for shopping with kids, I generally had a list, we did our shopping and we didn't hang around endlessly in the candy and cookie aisle where the temptations were. And we did have things like a package of Oreos or some treat on the list so it was kind of moot.

100 x 52/12 is 433 a month. But I still don't see it happening if your family of four eats like most families of four eat - unless Mom is a coupon whiz and shops at a warehouse like Food4Less where you can do double coupons. However, if you are shopping 3x a week, I don't see you being a coupon whiz or extraordinarily disciplined when it comes to meal planning. It just doesn't add up. Lately I've been having to kill a lot of time and have been "people watching" at Walmart and a local grocery chain. Walmart grocery shoppers are spending a boatload on processed food - Lunchables, frozen pizza, frozen fries, frozen this-n-that, sugary cereals, cookies, and pop. I would love to surreptitiously take photos of their carts and post them!

Oh, you know what? My bad! I include our grocery AND our restaurant meal money in the category of Food. So if other people don't, then that is conceivable. (And InsuranceGal, the math calc. was no slam against you, I had to sit down with a calculator to figure it out!)
