Pat, you quoted some hint this is not true....Both E. Hortensis and L. Terrestris are doing well in the deep White Sands of the ranch. And so are the Horned toads.

Well this should help beef prices or hamburger I guess. I read today they are reopening the "pink slime" factories. They said with the drought and less cattle that meat prices are so high, that is the reason. So I guess they are going to add this crap into food again. They were producing 5.5 million pounds of it before the publicity some time back. I believe they have opened 2 factories and have started producing 1 million pounds of it again, oh but its food grade so that should make everyone feel better. I will buy roast and grind my own meat, have no problem with that. Yuck! Pat, But why not make soup with the BONE IN roast& yellow 1015 and cheese? -bat-POT ROAST!! WITH GOLDEN DUTCH POTATOS & 1015!!!AND A NICE RED WINE!!

( Jackson brother's feed store, Abilene, TX suggestion). The E. Hortensiss are doing their thing. Well, we are working to make water channels to increase rain effect to 60-100 inches a year. Aside from working on better distribution models for our food supply, there are other things we can do to increase the quality and quantity of the thing everyone needs.

The issue here is toxification. China and India's arable land is under fire and so is their water supply. you wanna talk about govts that can't feed their own people... You were talking about your worm project in a different thread, lots of cows in India to produce worms - and they are going to need it. Like you said their is a burgeoning middle class in the two most populace countries, and the fact is their govts can't feed them with rising toxification.

A++++, On the JAL ranch we have two land seal raised test that uses the very heavy plastic to prevent water loss to the hard subsurface oil-sand tarmac. The top of this is covered with Scott's mosture advantage and is planted with "Food plot" fast growing high protein seed for the deer. Potatoes were planted in January. I also feed the worms in a hole in the tarmac with corm meal that makes water proof membrane to hold the moisture below the Scott Moisture Advantage media. I have planted about 30 bags of this growing media for my Golden potatoes that are now organic. Food will increase in value to the point where less will be wasted, Just a thought, BiMetalAuPt

, That's a great point, supply is the value added product of the burgeoning middle class. It's very cool that what grows in bull fertilizer + peat, can take old oil packed land and turn it into arable land and duck ponds. So the new land can be used for grazing, which produces more B.S..... God bless,

India has a real issue for the people in the slums, they have no place to go to the toilet. I've read about it they think a young girl was killed over going to the toilet in a field. But the authorities claimed she committed suicide. But they have huge issues with the poor having no place to go and going to the fields to relieve themselves and sneaking into them at night. Can you imagine millions of people having to do that, would be one big toilet. So they have a lot more problems then water and arable land.
IN WWII DURING THE WAR :BELGEAN USED A FARM OUT BUILDING WITH A TROF & DIRT WITH MILLIONS OF E. HORTENSIS TO RECYCLE HUMAN WASTE. I AM NOT SURE OF DETAILS BUT I WOULD BET THEY RETURNED IT TO THE WOOD LOTS.( per CDC lab notes on Bacteria and war)

Just trying to catch up on the subject here: -global warming- very disputed subject: supporters claim the human impact needs to be reduced. In this day and age, humans put many chemicals into atmosphere, anything from gas emissions from industrial plants to vehicles to pesticides and chemicals sprayed or administered to the fields to overpopulating and to deforestation and so on. All good arguments. All those raise the atmospheric temperature which in turn changes air current patterns leading to polar caps melting leading to a whole slew of changes. So yeah, humans medlled with nature and changed things. But all human impact is nothing compared to the amount of fumes, gases and chemicals put in the atmosphere by nature itself:volcanoes, decaying plants, trees, etc.
All this UN related or what not organization are making a big stink about the shortage in food and such. Quantitatively speaking there should be no shortage. The shortage apears when clean healthy food is required. Most of US food production has been industrialized to the extent where almost everything is modified genetically for biggere production. King corn is in everything and nobody but us wants to eat it. India and China could hack it for themselves if they would farm in more efficient ways. Using methods that are outdated and equipment dating back to the 1800s is not gonna maximize the production. Ofcourse if their populations keep increasing at the same pace that won't work anymore even if they use the most advanced technology. There are many other countries that are in worse shape than India and China. U.S. grain was sent and their governments turned it down because nobody wants to feed their population almost pure chemicals. Just as global warming, the subject of food production and farming is a convoluted, complicated one.

We are due a worming season as the last ice age WAS 1000 YEARS AGO: IF YOU CHECK THE LAST BILLION YEARS CO2 LEVELS REQUIRE 1,000 YEAR LAG TO WARMING!!! THE COKE TEST WITH CO2 RAISE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE VERY LARGE WATERWAYS.
NOW FOR FOOD, PLEASE SITE YOUR REFERANCES? We grow with out heavy chemical: deer love the corn patch as well as the increasing productive organic potato patch at our JAL ranch.

We use at the JAL 25% Paper Slurry and 50%leaf litter with 25% Scottt's Moisture advantage and water with 5 ml Scott's all purpose 24-8-16 to make about N1 to 60C mixture to prevent overheating of the E. Hortensis. ALSO THE SNYPES LOVE REAL LIVE WORMS.
Just a thought, BiMetalAuPt Optimization of Factors in Vermicomposting of Agricultural Organic Wastes and Variation of Main Properties of the Compost
ZHU Wei-qin,JIA Xiu-ying,WANG Yu-jie,WU Li-ping,ZHOU Yu(College of Science and Environment,Hangzhou Normal University,Hangzhou 310036,China)
In a laboratory incubation experiment, factors affecting vermicomposting of agricultural organic wastes were optimized, and vermicomposting conducted under the condition combining all the optimized factors. And then the resultant compost was analyzed for variation of its major properties. Results show that with vermicomposting going on,pH value and C/N ratio of the wastes decreased but EC content increased significantly;available N,available P in the organic wastes reached the highest in content on D45,and available K reached the highest in content on D30;activities of sucrase, urease and catalase increased but phosphatase activity decreased in the initial period of vermicomposting. Moreover, compared with the vermicompost of mixture of pig dung and rice straw(7∶3 in ratio,15 ℃in temperature,75% in humidity and 10 worms/pot in inoculation density),the vermicompost of pig dung and sawdust(7∶3 in ratio,20 ℃in temperature,75% in humidity and 15 worms/pot in inoculation density) was relatively lower in pH,EC and available K,but relatively higher in the activity of sucrase and phosphatase.Relatively speaking, vermicomposting of the mixture of pig dung and sawdust is an effective approach to safe recycling of agricultural organic waste.

That's where I'm on the fence about global warming: did humans have any impact due to heavy industrialization and such? Yes but not at the levels claimed by some scientists. Earth goes throug circles of warming and cooling and no matter what we do is still going to happen. Could we reduce some of the emissions so we can breathe "cleaner air"? Sure but that doesn't mean that we have to halt all production or stop driving because we will bring about the end of the world tommorrow. See! Trying to see the best of the both worlds, or make a compromise as one might say! This is is the hnd we've been dealt and we should make the best of it. Now as far as scientifically research in China about different or more efficient wys to farm I have no doubt that they have done and quite successfully but that doesn't mean that the technology or methods are easily available or within reach to many of the farmers. Unlike US that pours funds into agricultural programs, the Chinese government does it just for select few that manage to have a connection, influence or enough pull(read bribe the right person) to benefit of all this research. To them everything at this point is just image in the world. I have no knowledge about modern farming but I understand the old ways. That's what I grew up with:more outdated methods, small production but no modified anything. US scientists have medlled with the genetics of plants in order to maximize production and reduce susceptibility to germs, pathogens or make crops resistant to certain chemicals that kill weeds in order to reduce the man hour of labor needed. That's where GMO comes in: corn with fish genes, seed round-up ready and so on. Then we break the grains into all separate substances and use them in all foods. All is good because we became very efficient at that and use everything loosing or wasting nothing. Again corn comes to mind: grind it, produce molasses and extract syrop. Corn syrop or sugars extracted from corn are present in almost all foods mass produced that are available and affordable to the public at large. Replacing traditional sugar with corn byproducts seemed to be a good idea until we started having an epidemic of obesity and all sorts of intolerances and allergies. Ofcourse just corn didn't do it but a whole many other things similar to that. Thats the industrialization of agriculture and the target was bigger production, more profits. We done it but at what cost? organic farming while better in regards to people's health and well being, can make it just needs more support. We'll get there!

mroped , WHAT MORE MAY I SAY!! THE SUN IS KNOWN FOR CYCLES THAT EFFECT EVERY THING!!! ALSO WE HAVE NEW ENERGY SYSTEMS BEING DEVELOPED THAT WILL NOT ADD CO2 TO THE AIR WE BREATH: FUNNY THE SAME PEOPLE THAT VOTE NO FOR NUCLEAR FUSSION DO NOT LIKE COAL OR DAMS!!
TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT: WOOD PRODUCES MORE ENERGY THEN ALL THE OTHER RENEWABLES TOGETHER. ADDED CO2 WILL INCREASE WOOD PRODUCTION BY SOME 50% PER FINLAND TREE R&.

I read about a new irrigation pipe, they can pipe in salty water and the pipe has some system that lets the water drip out and it retains the salt in the pipe. They said it just needs flushed periodically so going to let them use water they couldn't before without distilling it. Right now its only available to industry and is expensive but they expect the price to go down as more is produced. Sounds like a real breakthrough and very useful for irrigation.. Membranes for removing NaCl (salt) have been around for a long time. This is how the nerves work. This must be an improvement that is without electric power ie by pressure. About the food problem in India and china. Land is the limiting factor so only high value food like in down town New York will pay off. There are some costing going on in this area and the compost is used for worms and fungus.

Recycling is the way forward for sure. It's nice that we have the tech now to anaylis how proper farming techniques will lead to better crops.. Its also cool that restoring the damage done to all that farmland in the east is using techniques from 3000 years ago - at least. I wanna see I giant mechanical worm! God bless,

With millions of chickens on turkeys being culled due to the bird flu, we are blind to start seeing a supply side issue soon. A couple years back when this first started to flare up in China, YUM foods and their suppliers took a big hit. What we are seeing right now if far greater in areas affected, and birds infected. Logically speaking, north America companies are probably going to take a beating from this. Companies like Hormel Foods(HRL), Tyson Foods(TSN), and most likely YUM Foods(YUM) are looking like they are about to go on sale.

Iowa has become the third state to declare a state of emergency. The virus continues to be found in wild birds, which is the true problem in all of this. At this point, any further spread of the outbreak will without a doubt cause problems for the companies in the supply line. Got kash?
