On another forum I frequent, there's been some discussion regarding divorce and a common reason given is that the poster's spouse was perfectly stable at first, and then at some point "turned into a nut job".
Anyways, this made me curious, because I wonder how often or accurate it is that a perfectly stable spouse suddenly turns crazy one day, without an obvious reason like they started abusing drugs / alcohol, had a serious traumatic experience, developed a medical condition, etc.
In my experience with past crazies that I've had a relationship with (and there have been a few), the red flags were always there from the get go. I just chose to ignore them.
So what do you think? Can a perfectly normal SO just turn crazy all of a sudden without good reason, or was the crazy there all along and they just hid it well at first and / or you put the blinders on to it?
I'm strongly leaning towards the latter, and really skeptical of the "they just went crazy" explaination.

My SO's always been crazy. Want proof? He married me. Lol. Even before you posted this, I figured I should probably add the addendum that I meant real crazy (as in serious, damaging, divorce-warranting crazy), not cutesy-poo crazy.

One hears of this stuff all the time, like being married to a serial killer and not seeing any clues.

daphne, in your DH's case it was a medical condition that got worse, so I don't think that qualifies as just randomly going crazy. One hears of this stuff all the time, like being married to a serial killer and not seeing any clues. True, but you gotta wonder if the wife really just had the blinders on and in retrospect, should've known that something was seriously wrong. If DH is out all night and comes home all muddy with a dirty shovel and pickaxe, chances are he wasn't out prospecting.

My Dad is bi-polar. He was married to Mom about ten years before any serious issues showed up. He was misdiagnosed (under the care of a Psychiatrist) for 10 years as schizophrenic.
If the psychiatrist did not get it right for 10 years, why be so hard on a common person.

Because in that case, the doctor knew there was a mental problem, just thought it was a different one. That's not the same as thinking someone is completely fine for 10 years and then deciding they are crazy.

What if they start out crazy and then become fine and normal. Should you worry then?

CL <3 Bob Ross! Totally off topic, The Andy Griffith show comes on every day after the news around here and there's a Bob Ross in the credits. So I think of you every evening around 7.

LOL Ima! I was going to say the same thing, but without the "honey". Daphne, what things did your DH do that were crazy, that you didn't realize was crazy? If you don't mind sharing so we know what to look for. And did it involve chocolate? <<gives CL the stink eye>>

Why Bob, however did you guess? I mean, I'm not totally alone. I spend quality time with my cats around then.
