...is it the perceived value in contrast to their clothes? ...is it the size? ...the yucky looking nails?

When it's made of plastic and/or has a decoder wheel on it.

What is the coffee-drinking-paper-reading icon suppose to mean?
Does it mean you are bored?

If the band turns the finger black or green it's a pretty sure indicator it's fake. And fake diamond or cubic zirconia can't cut glass.

Why do you ask? Are you going to wear a fake one?

When it looks like it is worth WAY more than the person wearing it!

When it's given to you by someone truly cheap (not frugal, but cheap).
I helped cater a wedding where the groom's ring hadn't arrived yet. He used bailing wire for the ceremony--I thought that was pretty cool, the bride and wedding party really got a kick out of it and they made sure they got some good pics.

<<< Why do you ask? Are you going to wear a fake one? >>>
...well, this is more a spin off from the "wedding ring, why?" thread... it just felt like the closest thing to polling the audience I could think of to maybe "back up" my opinion that she should avoid some of the bigger, flashier CZs, no matter how trendy they've become... I think she may regret that purchase after the initial ooh and ahh phase...
...then again, I can totally understand the "what's it to you?" approach to what we wear... ;D

I told DH nothing larger than a carat solitaire. Not so much that it looks fake, but I know DH has great taste and would get a really, really good diamond... I didn't want the value of a small house on my hand! But then again, I'm a simple girl!

To me, a ring would look fake if the color of the gold was off - i.e. too yellow-y.
21K and 22K gold doesn't look anything like the gold over here. Even 18K isn't as 'yellow'.
