The syllabus for my class that starts Monday was finally posted this morning. After reading all 11 pages two or three times, I've come to the conclusion that this teacher needs to practice what she is preaching. This is an Effective Management class for my BA. I took a similar one for my AA, so same material, class work is just more intense, but no problem. This person goes on and on about grammar, sentence structure, spelling, etc. and how important it is and much these will be weighed in the grades--there are about five papers due in eight weeks. Ok, I understand that good communication written/verbal are necessary. Why then are there several blatant errors, spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.? Oh and don't get me started on the spacing inconsistencies, columns that don't line up or start at the very bottom of the page and continue on to the next page. I am in no way an English major, but I would expect someone that has a least a master's degree and is telling students what is expected of them, would following through in their own work. Maybe I'm just be witchy

Maybe it's a secret test? You should correct it and hand it in at the start of your next class.

I've thought of that, but it would probably not be a good idea since I would then be on sh@@ list. I'm not bashing teachers in any way, because without them I wouldn't not be where I am. It's just that if you harp on something like this, you should have someone else proof your work. We all make mistakes, but it makes me wonder why I'm being held to a certain standard and the one who is teaching is not holding themselves to the same. Sort of like leading by example.

Can I just mention how much I hate doing stuff on a computer. The other day I wanted to create a one page document. Two lines of text, four columns of text-each with three boxes of equal sized but varying numbers of words in said boxes-followed by two lines of text. Easy enough to draw-beyond fricking frustrating for those of us who don't have the inclination/mentality to figure out the nuances of Word or other programs. I finally settled for one document with the two separate bits of information with a lot of white space between and another with my four columns of info in unequal size boxes. Then I physically cut and pasted and copied it on a flatbed printer. Crude but sort of effective. Maybe your professor doesn't know how to create the document. I sure as hell could have cared less about grammar and spelling by the time I was done.

Malarky - use the tables feature in Word to get a nice looking set of columns. It is really easy once you have done it once. There are tons of free tutorials on line too. Invest the time once & you will know it from there on out.
I always loved when the principal or teachers wrote school newsletters and they were full of grammatical and spelling errors.
I would not be happy if someone I was paying to teach me didn't exhibit competence. What is UGGH?

Wouldn't be the first time IME.

Most colleges have professors, not teachers. That could be part of the problem. Maybe upgrade the school?

Wouldn't be the first time IME. This was my first thought especialy because of the spacing problems. DH teaches a few classes at the local college. He doens't have the time to go there and use there computers. he does them at home with his computer. The only way around it would be for him to not post it online and just hand it out the first day of class. Would you really like that more? ;D
