MIL came over today and told us the funniest story about our 5yo nephew (which just cements my certainty that he's a future YM-er!) Last week DH's youngest sister finally left the nest. Their mom, older sister and the 5- and 2-yo nephews were helping with the boxes, and MIL stopped at a drive-thru (with all in tow) on the way to the new apartment. MIL told SIL that the meal was her treat, since SIL took time out of her day off to help out. SIL said, "nah, I'll just put it on my debit card." DN then apparently piped up and said, "Mom, do you want to save money?" SIL said, "sure," and DN replied, "Let grandma pay for it so you don't have to use your money!" He's either a future YM-er or future gold-digger (possibly both). What funny ideas have the kids in your life had about money?

My DD is too little to really get the concept of money yet. But she's been watching "Jake and the Never Land Pirates" on Disney Junior, so she refers to all money as "gold doubloons."

Your nephew is a cutie, JD. He will quickly graduated to the point where if it comes out of "his" money, it isn't a necessity. That includes the books, workbooks, and other school essentials his mom/dad gave him money to buy.

DD just turned 5 yrs and she has been hording money since she could walk. And she puts in places you never dream of. I will have to tell her kids and grandchildren to NOT throw out her stuff when she dies because there will be tons of money. And it's not just pennies and dimes. She will get a hold of our wallets and take the bills. Leaves $1. Everything higher she will take off with. And she will walk up to us and her grandparents and say "Just give me all your monies now."

It sounds like she has a promising career as a bank robber!

Great nephew was 4 when his uncle took him baseball card shopping. He wanted one that cost $300 and his uncle said no. He still wanted it but his uncle said he needed to ask his mom since he wasn't buying it for him. He explained to his uncle that mom was sure to buy it for him because he had 1,040 in the bank. He wasn't planning to spend his money but have mom buy it for him. When he asked his mom she said no and not only no but never.
He started saving money when he was 2 and even before that he enjoyed putting coins in a piggy bank. Once he discovered money was valuable he started collecting gold colored dollars and asked Santa for a safe to keep his treasures. He had too many toys so people started giving him gold dollars for all gift occasions so he had over $500 worth in his safe. Other money gifts were in his bank account.

I remember my son asking me to take him and his brother to the movies. When I explained that I did not have the money, he told me to go to the "money machine" (ATM) and get the money from it.

DD1 was about 3 (now 37). I was working PT demonstrating microwave ovens. I had to buy supplies to cook every week.
She saw me buying a 6 pk of hershey bars and asked if they were on sale. She already knew it was VERY unusual for me to purchase no-sale food stuff.
A couple years later DD2 learned to eat artichokes because I was making them for a demo.

When DS was in 3rd grade, he came home at the end of the year with a "free goldfish". I told him if he wanted to keep it, he needed to use his own money to buy a bowl and supplies, cost him about $7.
Two days later the fish dies. Two kids in tears. DD says "the fish died", DS says "I just wasted my money!"
I caved in and bought him a beta fish which lasted several years.

When I was a teenager, my Dad came home with 3 enemas. I asked him if they were on sale. I had no idea what a colonoscopy was or what you had to do to prepare for it. My Dad thought it was hilarious and went around telling everyone the story. Seriously Dad, I'm like 16 - prime time embarassment phase. That was when I learned that if you said something stupid, it was best to pretend you knew you were making a joke the whole time.
