The question about wedding presents gave me the idea to come here for advice. The son of a friend will have his Bar Mitzvah in 2 months and I have been invited to celebrate the event. I am not Jewish however and have absolutely no idea what would be an appropriate present. Can anyone please help?

GELT! (That's money!) An Amazon or I-Tunes gift card may also be appreciated ~ or movie theater tickets.
Often the money is in multiples of eighteen--$18, $36, $72 etc. It is considered lucky, because the 10th and 8th letters in the Hebrew alphabet spell chai, which means life. Chai is also the source of the toast: L'chaim or "to life".

If you remember that the Bar Mitzvah is a boy who has reached the age of becoming religiously/spiritually responsible for his own actions. (Bar = owner) + (Mitzvah = good deed) then any gift that fits into this framework will be wonderful.
My sons received a great variety of gifts: From money to camping equipment, and from books to items of Judaica.

Considering that even his parents have a hard time buying him presents, I think that "gelt" it is and in a multiple of 18. I like that idea.
Thank you all.
