It is sitting at home posting on political message boards instead of working that is the actual cause of the increase in mental illness.

... In Washington Heights, there is a cottage industry in people being coached on how to act bipolar. .... Coaching insanity. A growth industry for out of work psychology majors.

There is a reason for the saying "Idle hands are the devil's workshop" I'm sure there are people who legitimately go round the bend after a long jobless period, especially if they identified with their jobs.
On the other hand, what you choose to do and think about have a huge impact on your mental health and are completely within your control. When my boss was unemployed, he took over the housework without being asked and spent quite a lot of time exercising. Other men choose to sit on the couch, fondle their remotes and let the women who are supporting them do all the cooking and cleaning when they get home from work. Which lifestyle choice do you think will lead to a healthy mind and marriage?

Sorry babe. You can have the nuts on toast if you like. Living in NYC is nuts enough. What does this mean? Is it even English?

Sorry. I'll try to speak slower next time. Just use a coherent thought please, what does toast and nuts have to do with anything?

I'm not sure. The meds must be kicking in. I'm at the mailbox, waiting for my disability check... In my slippers, eating crab cakes and sipping champagne. More like in flip flops, eating cheetos, and drinking soda...then later they'll claim disability that they are too fat to work.

They gouge themselves at the local soup kitchen and then collect disability once they have given themselves type 2 diabetes.

The jump in successful disability claims also is making the unemployment picture look extra rosy because those folks are falling off the jobless rolls.
“If they’re on disability they’re generally not counted,” says Feroli, who estimates that a quarter of those dropping out of the job market are getting disability. “It’s no trivial number.”
Many are falling off the jobless roles in spite of the fact that they are still "jobless" and 25% of them go on to collect SSDI? WOW!!

Do you really believe that anywhere near 25% of those dropping out of the job market have true mental health issues? Yes, I'm sure there are a few real cases in there, but I'm having trouble believing that the vast majority aren't fakers.

Jobless disability claims soar to record $200B as of JanuaryWow, there's actual 'soaring' involved. Of course when you look at the numbers and realize that there were 6.5 million Americans on disability in 2002 and that that number has been steadily climbing by a bit less than half a million recipients per year, you quickly come to the conclusion that the number isn't suddenly 'soaring' as much as it has been on a steady upward trend for over a decade. Once again however leave it to the New York Post to stir up the uninformed by telling them how little they actually know.

I'm also sick of the cradle to grave phrase. Unless you are born poor, stay poor and have children cradle to grave is not achievable. As a responsible adult who doesn't have children so far I've only qualified for unemployment which is paid for from when I work. No crab legs or Escalade for me. It seems though that there should be active investigations into these claims as 25% is too high of a number IMO. I could see 10% perhaps.

It usually requires certain complications like blindness, kidney failure, or limb amputation

My uncle had a brain aneurysm in the late 80's and lost his short term memory. He lost his job as a mechanic on transmissions. Since that was in his long term memory he could still do that as his lively hood. Once he got fired last year and there were no shops hiring in the area, they put him on SSDI since they said he was untrainable.

Just for diabetes- no way in hell- complete renal failure sure, stat blind-ok, limb amputation maybe.

Of course the number could drop by extending health care subsidies for example, so that border-line nutters wouldn't go without their meds until they were stark, raving mad, but the Post wouldn't go for that. That might help, but then that's just replacing one set of welfare for another. Remember, were still broke.

Yes, I'm sure there are a few real cases in there, but I'm having trouble believing that the vast majority aren't fakers. I had my first payroll job in 1970, and have worked at various jobs in several industries since then. From my experience, there are a lot of border-line kooks in the workforce. In addition, there are many who are over the edge but somehow manage to retain employment despite their various and sundry psyche idiosyncracies. When such people are suddenly rendered jobless and indigent, it can push them over the edge. Desperation is a nasty catalyst that causes tragic reactions.

True, unemployment is hard on a person's mental health. But I also think that if loosing your mind means collecting a check for the rest of your life rather than being confined to the nuthouse, then you have less motivation to keep it together.

I can see how unemployment factors into clinical depression, and how clinical depression keeps you from finding another job.
It's a vicious cycle.

I'm just looking for an excuse to claim depression and get disability and still get approval from YM.

Archie...Workers comp and disability is a standing joke here in our CA. prison town. Go to work for a few years, fake a disability and then go home and sit on your butt. However, when someone is turned in for faking a case, seldom is anything ever done about it. This is the problem.
it's big for the public sector unions in NY also.
they call it "getting shot with the golden BB".

you've just described "generational welfare".
im willing to bet there are young women with children on welfare that can trace their welfare "roots" back to the original welfare recipients from the 60s.
