Here's the problem, Nancy.....
We have 1 year to use the airline tickets but I've been out of work 8 weeks already. I have 10 weeks of sick time and ~5 weeks of vacation accrued. Right now, my FMLA is on 'hold' and I'm working from home. I'll be on this status until I go in for my next surgery. So by the time I get home and mobile, my sick time is going to be nil and my vacation time is going to be close to nil.
If I need a third surgery (if my other prosthesis is infected), I will have to go on LTD. Fortunately, it'll continue to pay my health insurance and contribute to my 403b along with paying 70% me of my income (100% for the first 6 months). But the clock I've been on will be reset back to the beginnning and I'll be going no where for a very long time.

Well, can you use the airline tickets for a trip anywhere, or does it have to be the original destination?
And have you contacted the airline and explained the situation? I realize they will likely not work with you, but you never know until you ask. You may be able to get an extension for the use of the tickets, or a partial refund. I don't know what type of tickets you bought, so I have to ask.

The tickets we bought were non-refundable and they're going to charge us $150/ticket to reticket, along with any difference in the cost of the ticket.
Right now, I've got 2 sets of airline tickets in my name that I have bailed on. My Christmas trip out here, I was in the hospital in KY the day I was supposed to leave. For that ticket, I'll only have to pay the difference in the cost of the ticket.
I wonder when the one year date is suppose to start the clock? Is it 1 year from when I bought the tickets (Nov), 1 year from the date of travel (Feb) or 1 year from when I cancelled (Jan)? I suppose I need to call Delta and find out......

A good idea, indeed is to call Delta and ask. And explain the situation. And keep working on recovery. I wondered if you could book a trip using the tickets, but take a trip closer to home. Not as nice as the one you had planned, but better than losing the tickets altogether.

As close as possible to the one year mark book a trip somewhere. Cancel again & have the one year clock start again. I realize you forfeit another $150 per, but you still have another year to use your tickets.
ETA: Sorry you had to bail on the original trip & hope for a fast recovery.

Delta has been very good. The last time Mich was here for hip surgery, she wound up in the hospital just before she was about to leave to go home but instead ended up having her gallbladder out (I'm being to see a pattern here ). I looked on-line and the comments about Delta working with people in this situation weren't good. We called them and they were wonderful, they waived the change fee and worked with Mich to get a flight at about the same cost as she previously had.

Well, I would, but yanno, I really like the idea of you two jetting off together at some point, even if Mich is shuffling along, using a walker while you carry all 12 pieces of luggage. And when you check into that romantic hotel, I can hear it now as you approach the desk and whisper to the clerk,
"That room does come with a king-size hospital bed, right?" ;D

I'd like to go. DH would probably put a halt to that one. Even if I said it was an humanitarian trip.
Can you sell the tickets?

The walker is about right but not the 12 pieces of luggage, we do tend to travel light. I'm amazed at the number of people at the airport that appear to have packed their entire closet into suitcases. You'd spend your holiday lugging suitcases from one spot to another. After Mich's surgery she had to have X-rays taken which required her to try and lie flat on the X-ray table and then get her hip in the right position. Let's just say that on a pain scale of 1 to 10, she was about a 27. It suddenly occurred to me that my flat beds back here weren't going to work. Luckily, my stepfather had an adjustable bed that you could raise the head and foot just like a hospital bed, it was a life saver I think for Mich. My brother and I had to move it down across the border and it was one heavy sucker. I thought the border was going to be a problem but it wasn't, the guy at customs was more interested in talking about my brother about his home built plane (we think he clued in because of the airport access sticker on my brother's vehicle). Customs was curious about my brother being born in London but holding a Canadian passport and me who was born in Canada with a US passport and a girlfriend who lived in Kentucky

You should have told them the truth about your smuggling operations and moonshining outfit. You would have gotten across the border with no problem. Oh, and don't be dissing my packing skills, OK?

Yup, that was me under all those suitcases and shopping bags. Oh, and the backpack. I had to stash all the chocolate bars I bought in something.
