Daniel Hannan is living in the future of the United States, and he has a message for us: WAKE UP! Before it's too late:

That's why Obama and the left in both Parties are so frustrated: it's not that our people are exceptional, it is that our system is exceptional. It was intentionally carefully designed to stop us from destroying ourselves rapidly. Of course, if determined, over a period of 70 to 80 years, any people with any Constitution can destroy themselves.

Stick anything you want under the broad umbrella of the 'commerce clause' and you can ignore all sorts of roadblocks set up by our founders.

I agree. I fear we are going down the road to becomming just another struggling socialist country. I'm not going to be like Glenn Beck and say it will be doomsday, but I do think by "fundamentally transforming America" we're losing what made us a great country.
There are plenty of examples of how liberalism, socailism, and communism don't work. From the EU, to the soviet Union, to just the State of California. Every example shows that it simply doesn't work, and yet people keep wanting to go down that road for some reason. Liberals keep thinking this time will be different.

Lions, and tigers and bears, OH MY! We are doomed! I was a happy man before I started reading these threads and learned that the sky is falling and that we are all going to become slaves. All I can add is the advice that Lewis Grizzard gave in his book, "Aim Low, Boys! They're riding Shetland Ponies!

I can hardly wait for tomorrow's hyperbolic end-times jeremiad. The silly neo-con dramaqueen shtick got really old a long time ago... it's the ideological equivalent of stale "Twinkies". Anyone can make wild declarations of impending catastrophe, i.e., "If the Republican Party cannot manage to rein in their extremist crackpot constituents, they're doomed".

let's look at the Right, shall we? There are plenty of examples of how dictatorships, theocracies, and social-darwinesque anarchies don't work either. From Central America to South America to the Middle East to Africa to just the rural South. Here's a fun project! Go to the "List of countries by Human Development Index" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_IndexLook at the ranking of countries. Notice how the top is dominated by socialist countries? So where's those shining "Conservative" countries? Waaay down the list, I imagine. Sorry, Cherrypicksylvania isn't there. One problem with Conservatives is they often can't solve the problem of when "the emperor has no clothes." Here the poster (via cherry picked examples, but let's go with it for now) "points out the nakedness," but can't give the emperor anything to wear. Don't worry this also applies to Romney, who can point things out about Obama or the "not Romney" candidate who threatens his lead, but that's about it. And this also applies to Obamacare. I hear shouts of "repeal it!" Then what? back to the broken system we had before? Instead of wrapping themselves in the Constitution, Conservatives should read it once a while. Or give yourself a pat on the back for another well deserved self declared victory over nobody. I didn't find a badge, but if you go here www.cafepress.com/thegidget.495203593 you can get a Captain Hyperbole thermos, t-shirt, tote-bag, i-pad case, and other things. But the cheapest thing there costs eleventy billion hyperboles, so save up.

"Look at the ranking of countries. Notice how the top is dominated by socialist countries?"
Mkitty, help me out. When I look at the charts I see the USA and Canada as the two top ranking countries. Am I reading this right?
Surely we don't need Darrel to tell us spending more then you take in for an extended period of time will cause anyone to go broke.

Mkitty, I guess it depends on how you define "top". At the time we started the original TEA Party in Boston Harbor, the British Empire was pretty much the "top country". And yet, a tiny band of the top 1% decided to give up all the trappings of being in the top 1% to start a new nation, that within less than 200 years became the undisputed "top country". Now, I realize you probably think it's because we imported slaves-- but in actuality, it was a triumph of individualism. For most of our first 150 years anyway, we largely lived in a place where citizens have heard "of" Washington, D.C., but very few, if any ordinary citizens had ever heard "from" Washington, D.C.

Where do you get the "we" from?
The Tea Party band that disguised themselves as "indians" and trashed the tea shipment were disgruntled British subjects, descended from "puritan" emigrés and their indentured servants. I doubt any of "the 1%" were in attendance, as the 1%ers were all Royalist tories. It wasn't the "landed gentry" that were rebelling against the Crown.

I don't get the point of the Human development index. The U.S is ranked 4th, which is pretty respectable out of 185 nations. We were even ranked above some socialist countries, or countries with more "advanced" social welfare programs like universal health care. For example, we were rated above Canada, Ireland, Germany, and Switzerland.

About the Boston Tea Party www.boston-tea-party.org/participants/participants.html See... it was mostly employed but disgruntled young people that did the actual vandalism, egged on by their elders, most likely. No "1 %ers" represented... not an earl or a lord in the entire lot.

“If you go down the road and reverse the constitutional principles, you’ll see Americans start acting like Frenchman.” -------------------------- Oh Noez!! Not Frenchmen!! You mean they'll cease worrying about healthcare, dress well, stop eating when they're full and walk a lot more? Oh, the horror!

How does one thread jump from (1) grits to (2) the Tea Party; to (3) captain Hyperbole; to (4) a discussion of French fashion?
